1) Does this Nibco CPVC union thread onto pipe, or does it need to be solvent welded?
Both ends are female NPT thread, so it threads onto male-threaded pipe or nipples with no cement or cure time. It is an F x F configuration on Schedule 80 CPVC. If your run is plain-end pipe, you either need male adapters at the union or a socket (solvent weld) union instead.
2) What is the maximum temperature for a Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 threaded union?
Maximum service temperature is 210 degrees F. That is the headline reason to use Corzan CPVC over standard PVC on hot process or hot water lines. Keep in mind threaded plastic joints are normally de-rated versus solvent welded ones at elevated temperature and pressure.
3) Will the EPDM seal in this union hold up to my chemical?
The seal is EPDM, which gives good abrasion and tear resistance plus strong chemical resistance across many services, but it is not recommended for petroleum oils or most strong acids. If your line carries oil, fuel or concentrated acid, specify a union with a different elastomer (FKM/Viton is the usual alternative). Chemtrol chemical resistance data should be checked against your specific media.
4) Can I use a CPVC union on potable water in a commercial building?
Yes. The union is lead-free and listed to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, which are the potable water material and health-effects standards inspectors look for. It also carries ASTM F1970. Typical service is commercial plumbing, industrial process and irrigation.
5) Can I air test a CPVC piping system with this union installed?
No. Do not use or test this fitting with compressed air or any other gas. Plastic piping under gas pressure can fail explosively. Hydrostatic test with water instead.
6) Why put a union in a CPVC line instead of just a coupling?
A union gives you a break point you can take apart later. Threaded on both ends with an EPDM seal, it lets you pull a pump, valve or strainer for service without cutting pipe or heat-welding a repair coupling back in. On a solvent-welded system that difference is the whole reason it is there.
7) How do I tell CPVC fittings from PVC on site?
