1) How does the Nibco 5103 CPVC adapter connect on each end?
One end is a solvent-weld socket that cements over the outside of Schedule 80 CPVC pipe, and the other is a female NPT thread that a male threaded pipe or nipple screws into. That S x F (NPT) arrangement is how you transition from a cemented plastic line to a threaded connection such as a valve, gauge or equipment port. Use thread sealant appropriate for CPVC on the threaded side and solvent cement on the socket side.
2) Is this fitting approved for potable water in a commercial building?
The 5103 CPVC adapter is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it is listed as a lead-free application, which is what a plumbing inspector looks for on a potable water system. It also meets ASTM F439 for Schedule 80 CPVC socket fittings.
3) Will this CPVC adapter fit my Schedule 40 PVC pipe?
No. It is a Schedule 80 CPVC socket, and CPVC pipe has different dimensions and cement requirements than PVC. Schedule 80 CPVC socket fittings per ASTM F439 are made for CPVC pipe of the same nominal size, joined with CPVC solvent cement. Mixing in PVC pipe or PVC cement is not a joint you want on a pressure line.
4) Can I air test a CPVC piping system built with these fittings?
No. The instruction on this Chemtrol CPVC line is explicit: do not use or test with compressed air or other gases. Hydrostatic test with water only. Thermoplastic fittings under gas pressure can fail suddenly and violently.
