Nibco CB11190 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Nibco 5118 CPVC bushing connect - is it threaded or solvent weld?
Both ends are solvent weld. The 5118 is a Spg x S bushing: the outside is a spigot that cements into the socket of a larger fitting, and the inside is a socket that takes the smaller CPVC pipe. No threads, no gaskets. Cement it with the appropriate CPVC solvent cement per Chemtrol's installation data.
2) What size reductions does the Nibco 5118 CPVC Schedule 80 bushing come in?
Reductions run from 1/2 inch x 1/4 inch up to 8 inch x 6 inch. Common steps include 3/4 x 1/2, 1 x 3/4, 1 x 1/2, 1-1/4 x 1, 1-1/2 x 1/2, 2 x 1-1/2, 2 x 1/2, 2-1/2 x 1, 3 x 2, 3 x 1, 4 x 3, 4 x 2, and 6 x 4, so you can drop several sizes in one fitting rather than stacking reducers.
3) What is the maximum temperature for a Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 bushing?
210 degrees F is the maximum service temperature. That is the headroom CPVC gives you over standard PVC, which is why Corzan CPVC gets specified on hot water and heated process lines. Remember pressure rating falls off as temperature climbs, so size the system against the manufacturer's temperature/pressure derating data.
4) Is this CPVC bushing approved for potable water?
The 5118 bushing carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it is listed as a lead-free application item. Those are the listings plan reviewers look for on domestic water in commercial buildings.
5) Can I air test a CPVC Schedule 80 line built with these bushings?
No. Chemtrol states plainly not to use or test these fittings with compressed air or other gases. Hydrostatic test only. Air testing thermoplastic piping stores energy and can shatter the fitting.
6) Will a Nibco 5118 bushing fit standard Schedule 80 CPVC pipe and fittings?
Yes, it is a Schedule 80 CPVC fitting built to ASTM F439, so it mates with Schedule 80 CPVC socket dimensions from any compliant maker. It is light grey Corzan CPVC, which is how you tell it apart from the dark grey Schedule 80 PVC sitting in the same rack. Do not mix it into a PVC system without checking the cement and the service conditions.
7) Can I use a flush socket bushing instead of a reducing coupling?
A flush bushing is the right call when you are reducing into an existing fitting socket - a tee, elbow, coupling or valve - because the spigot end glues straight into that socket and adds almost no length to the run. Use a reducing coupling instead when you are joining two lengths of pipe in open line and nothing is there to bush into.
8) How do I order the right Nibco 5118 bushing - what part number do I give?
Order by the reduction, and the MPN follows it. For example 3/4 x 1/2 is CB10600, 1 x 3/4 is CB10650, 1-1/2 x 1 is CB10940, 2 x 1-1/2 is CB11100, 3 x 2 is CB11550, 4 x 3 is CB11650, and 6 x 4 is CB11800. Always state the large size first and the reduced size second.
9) I need to thread a fitting down to a smaller NPT - will this bushing do it?
Not this one. The 5118 is Spg x S, meaning the reduced end is a cement socket for CPVC pipe, not a female pipe thread. If you need to take a socket down to NPT, ask for a CPVC Schedule 80 spigot by FIPT bushing instead.
10) What kind of systems is this Chemtrol CPVC bushing used on?
Commercial plumbing, industrial process piping, and irrigation, including lead-free service. CPVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is why it shows up on chemical and hot-water lines where metal pipe gives trouble.
