Nibco CB07000 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between the Nibco 5111 and the 5111R tee?
Same fitting family, different geometry. The 5111 is the straight socket tee, where all three ports are the same size, for example the 1 inch (CB07000) or the 4 inch (CB07750). The 5111R is the reducing socket tee, where the branch is smaller than the run, listed as run x run x branch, for example 2 x 2 x 1/2 (CB07550) or 6 x 6 x 4 (CB07950). If you are dropping a smaller branch off a main, order the reducing version instead of a full size tee plus a bushing.
2) How hot can a Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 tee run?
Maximum service temperature is 210 degrees F. That is the headline reason to pick CPVC over standard PVC on a hot water or process line. Keep in mind that pressure rating on any thermoplastic falls off as temperature climbs, so a line running near the top of that range is not carrying its cold-water working pressure.
3) Is the Nibco 5111 CPVC tee approved for potable water?
It is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it is listed as a lead-free application, which is what a plumbing inspector looks for on a potable water system. The fitting also meets ASTM F439, the standard covering Schedule 80 CPVC socket-type fittings.
4) Can I use these CPVC tees on a compressed air line?
No. Nibco states plainly that Chemtrol CPVC fittings are not to be used or tested with compressed air or other gases. That includes pressure testing the system with air. Use water for hydrostatic testing, and run compressed air in metal pipe.
5) What sizes does the Nibco 5111 CPVC Schedule 80 tee come in?
Straight tees run 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 inch. The reducing configurations are 3/4 x 3/4 x 1/2, 1 x 1 x 3/4, 1 x 1 x 1/2, 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 1, 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 3/4, 2 x 2 x 1-1/2, 2 x 2 x 1, 2 x 2 x 3/4, 2 x 2 x 1/2, 3 x 3 x 2, 4 x 4 x 3, 4 x 4 x 2 and 6 x 6 x 4. Note there is no reducing branch offered above 6 x 6 x 4, and 8 inch is straight only.
6) Will a CPVC Schedule 80 tee hold up in a chemical process or industrial line?
That is what this one is built for. Corzan CPVC carries high corrosion and chemical resistance and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and the fitting is listed for commercial plumbing, industrial and irrigation service. Chemical compatibility is specific to the media, concentration and temperature, so check the media against Chemtrol's chemical resistance guide before you commit the line.
7) Do I need a separate bushing to reduce the branch on a Nibco CPVC tee?
Not if a reducing size exists for what you need. The 5111R covers the common drops directly, including 2 x 2 x 3/4 (CB07500) and 3 x 3 x 2 (CB07700), which saves a joint and a leak path versus a full size tee with a reducer bushing. Where no reducing tee is offered, such as an 8 inch main, you will run the full size tee and reduce off the branch.
8) What color is the Nibco Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 tee, and how do I tell it apart from PVC on the job?
Light grey. Schedule 80 PVC fittings are typically dark grey, so the lighter grey is the quick visual cue that you are holding CPVC and not PVC. That matters because the two take different solvent cements and have different temperature ratings.
