Nibco CB08965 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Nibco 5112 CPVC tee connect - is the branch threaded or solvent welded?
The 5112 is an S x S x FPT tee: both run ends are solvent-weld sockets and the branch is a female NPT thread. So the run gets cemented to Schedule 80 CPVC pipe and the branch takes a male threaded nipple, gauge, sensor or valve nipple. Configuration is listed as S x S x F, straight size, meaning all three openings are the same nominal size.
2) Can I use this CPVC tee on hot water or a hot process line?
Maximum service temperature is 210 degrees F. Corzan CPVC holds mechanical strength across a broad temperature range, which is why it is used on hot lines where PVC would not go. Keep in mind pressure rating drops as temperature climbs, so check the Chemtrol pressure/temperature data for your operating temperature.
3) Is this CPVC tee approved for potable water?
It is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and listed as a lead-free application part. System uses on record are commercial plumbing, industrial, irrigation and lead-free service. The fitting also meets ASTM F439 for Schedule 80 CPVC socket fittings.
4) Can I run compressed air through a Schedule 80 CPVC tee like this?
No. Chemtrol CPVC fittings are not to be used or tested with compressed air or other gases. That includes pressure testing the line with air. Use water for testing and keep the system on liquid service.
5) Will this Nibco tee fit Schedule 40 CPVC pipe?
The sockets are Schedule 80 CPVC. Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 CPVC share the same outside diameter at a given nominal size, so the pipe will enter the socket, but the fitting's own pressure rating is set by the Schedule 80 body and the system rating will be limited by the thinner Sch 40 pipe. For a full Schedule 80 system, match it with Schedule 80 pipe.
6) Do I need thread sealant on the FPT branch of this CPVC tee?
The threaded branch is a female NPT port, so it needs a thread sealant rated for CPVC - PTFE tape or a plastic-safe pipe dope. Do not use solvent cement in the threaded port; cement belongs only in the two sockets. Thread by hand plus a light turn with a strap wrench; over-torquing splits plastic female threads.
7) Can I mix this CPVC tee with PVC pipe in the same line?
CPVC and PVC are different materials with different cements and different temperature limits, so they should not be solvent welded to each other. If you have to join a CPVC line to PVC, make the transition mechanically at the threaded branch or with a threaded adapter rather than cementing dissimilar materials.
8) Is this the grey CPVC fitting, and how do I tell it from PVC on the shelf?
Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 is light grey. Schedule 80 PVC is typically dark grey and Schedule 40 PVC is white, so the light grey body plus the 5112 stamp is how you confirm you have the CPVC part. Universal part number is 1802.
