Nibco CB17950 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is this a threaded union or a solvent weld union?
Both ends are socket (solvent weld), S x S. You cement it to Schedule 80 CPVC pipe on each side; there are no pipe threads on the run ends. If you need to break into a threaded line, you will want a threaded-end union or a transition fitting instead.
2) What does the FKM seal in this union handle chemically?
The FKM fluoroelastomer O-ring suits most applications involving mineral acids, salt solutions, chlorinated hydrocarbons and petroleum oils. That is the reason to pick this version over an EPDM-sealed union, which is the better choice for different media. Check the Chemtrol chemical resistance data for your specific fluid and concentration.
3) Can this union be used on potable water in a commercial building?
Yes. The 5133 is a lead-free fitting certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it also carries ASTM F1970. System uses listed include commercial plumbing, industrial and irrigation.
4) Can I pressure test this CPVC union with compressed air?
No. Do not use or test this fitting with compressed air or other gases. Hydrostatic test only. Testing thermoplastic pipe with air stores energy in the line and a failure at the union can be violent.
5) Will a CPVC Schedule 80 union work on Schedule 40 CPVC pipe?
Yes for the joint itself. The 5133 is a Schedule 80 fitting, and Sch 40 and Sch 80 CPVC share the same outside diameter at a given nominal size, so the socket accepts either. What changes is the pressure rating of the system, which the thinner Sch 40 pipe wall governs, not the fitting.
6) Why put a union in a CPVC line instead of just a coupling?
A solvent welded coupling is permanent; cutting it out means cutting pipe. The 5133 union gives you a demountable joint at a pump, valve, strainer or piece of equipment so it can be pulled for service and reinstalled without touching the surrounding pipe. Put one on each side of anything you expect to remove.
7) What color is Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 pipe and will this union match my existing run?
The 5133 is light grey, which is the standard Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 color. If your existing industrial line is grey Sch 80 CPVC it will match visually; dark grey PVC Sch 80 and orange CPVC hot/cold tube are different materials and should not be solvent welded to this fitting with the same cement.
8) Do CPVC fittings like this corrode or scale in an industrial water system?
No. Corzan CPVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and the fittings are lightweight and maintenance free. That is the usual reason these get specified over metal unions on chemical feed, cooling and process water lines.
