Nibco CA08200 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What sizes does the Nibco 4511 PVC Schedule 80 socket tee come in, and which ones are reducing?
Full-size (all three ports equal) runs 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 inch. The 4511R reducing configurations cover 3/4 x 3/4 x 1/2, 1 x 1 x 3/4, 1 x 1 x 1/2, 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 1, 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 3/4, 2 x 2 x 1-1/2, 2 x 2 x 1, 2 x 2 x 3/4, 2 x 2 x 1/2, 3 x 3 x 2, 4 x 4 x 3, 4 x 4 x 2 and 6 x 6 x 4. On the reducing bodies the run stays the larger size and only the branch steps down, so you do not need a bushing in the branch.
2) Are these Chemtrol PVC tees threaded or solvent weld?
Solvent weld. All three ports are female socket, S x S x S, so they cement over the outside of Schedule 80 PVC pipe. There is no thread on any port. If you need a threaded branch for a gauge, drain or takedown point, you want a different fitting configuration, not this one.
3) Will a Schedule 80 PVC socket tee fit Schedule 40 PVC pipe?
Yes on the pipe OD. Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 PVC share the same outside diameter at a given nominal size, so a Sch 80 socket tee cements onto Sch 40 pipe of the same size. The difference is wall thickness and pressure rating: the Sch 80 fitting is heavier and rated higher, and the Sch 40 pipe becomes the weak link in the run. Mixing that way is common on repairs, but a system spec'd to Sch 80 should use Sch 80 pipe throughout.
4) What is the temperature limit on these PVC Schedule 80 tees?
140 degrees F maximum service temperature. That rules them out for hot water distribution and any process line that can spike above that. PVC also loses pressure capability as it warms toward that ceiling, so a line running warm continuously needs to be de-rated. For hot water you need CPVC or metal, not PVC.
5) Can I use these tees on a compressed air line?
No. Nibco states plainly not to use or test these PVC fittings with compressed air or other gases. PVC fails brittle and fragments under stored gas energy. Hydrostatic test with water only. This applies to the pressure test as well as the service medium, which is where people most often get caught out.
6) Are these PVC tees approved for potable water?
They carry NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and are listed as lead-free, which is the certification set a plumbing inspector looks for on potable water service. System uses listed include commercial plumbing, industrial, irrigation and lead-free applications.
7) I need to take a 3/4 inch branch off a 2 inch PVC line. What do I order?
Order the 2 x 2 x 3/4 reducing socket tee, MPN CA08700. The 2 inch run cements straight into your existing line and the branch socket already accepts 3/4 inch pipe, so no reducer bushing is needed. If the branch is 1/2 inch instead, that is CA08750; 1 inch is CA08650; 1-1/2 inch is CA08600.
8) Does the Nibco 4511 tee meet the ASTM spec my drawings call for?
The tee is manufactured to ASTM D2467, which is the standard for PVC Schedule 80 socket-type fittings. If the piping schedule on your drawing cites D2467 sockets, this matches. Note D2467 is the socket standard, not the threaded one, so a spec calling for threaded Sch 80 fittings is a different callout.
9) Is PVC Schedule 80 a good choice for a chemical feed or corrosive drain line?
It is a common one. PVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and Chemtrol PVC Schedule 80 has the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of the major thermoplastics used for piping. The limits to check are chemical compatibility with your specific medium against Nibco's chemical resistance guide, and the 140 degree F temperature ceiling.
10) Do I need primer and cement for these socket tees, and are they included?
The tee ships as the fitting only. Solvent cementing a Schedule 80 socket joint takes PVC primer and PVC solvent cement rated for the pipe size, and neither is packed with the fitting. Larger diameters, 6 inch and up, generally want a heavy-bodied cement and a second set of hands for the assembly window.
11) Why is this PVC fitting dark grey instead of white?
Dark grey is the standard color convention for Schedule 80 PVC, the same way white marks Schedule 40. On a job where both schedules are present, the grey is how an inspector or the next tech tells at a glance which sections are the heavier-wall Sch 80. It is a color code, not a material difference.
12) Is the Chemtrol 4511 the same as Nibco, or are they different brands?
Chemtrol is a Nibco brand, so the 4511 socket tee and 4511R reducing socket tee are Nibco product carrying the Chemtrol name on the plastic fitting line. If a submittal lists Chemtrol and your PO says Nibco, or the reverse, they are the same fitting. The universal part number for this pattern is 801.
