The dark grey PVC socket coupling and reducing socket coupling feature female socket connections. Chemtrol® fittings connect PVC piping lengths together with solvent cementing, threading or flanging to create a highly reliable, leak-free system. Please refer to Chemtrol technical data sheets, chemical resistance guides and catalogs for engineering and installation information. PVC Schedule 80 has the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of any other major thermoplastic material used for piping. Chemtrol® PVC fittings are lightweight, easy to install, maintenance-free, and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. Chemtrol® premium line of plastic fittings is backed by a 1-year limited warranty. Because Chemtrol® is a NIBCO brand the flow-control fittings are unsurpassed in quality, performance and longevity.

Nibco CA00250 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Nibco 4501 PVC Schedule 80 coupling be threaded onto pipe, or does it have to be solvent cemented?
Both ends are female sockets (S x S), so this coupling is solvent cemented onto the pipe, not threaded. There is no thread on either end. If you need a threaded joint at that point in the run, you need a different end configuration, not the 4501.
2) What is the maximum temperature a PVC Schedule 80 socket coupling can handle?
Maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F. That rules it out for hot water distribution or any line that can see steam or high-temperature process fluid; for those, you need a different material.
3) Will a Nibco 4501 coupling join a 2 inch line to a 1 inch line?
Yes. The reducing version (4501R) is made in that exact combination, 2" x 1", part CA01000. Reducing sizes run from 3/4" x 1/2" up through 8" x 6", including 1-1/2" x 1/2", 3" x 1-1/2", 4" x 2" and 6" x 4". Straight couplings cover 1/4" through 12".
4) Is this PVC coupling approved for potable water in a commercial building?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and is listed lead-free, which is what a plumbing inspector looks for on potable lines. Noted uses are commercial plumbing, industrial and irrigation.
5) Can I use this coupling on a compressed air line?
No. The manufacturer states plainly: do not use or test with compressed air or other gases. That includes pressure testing the system with air. Hydrostatic test only.
6) Will a Schedule 80 PVC coupling fit Schedule 40 PVC pipe?
Yes on the fit. The socket is sized to ASTM D2467 Schedule 80 fitting dimensions, and PVC pipe OD is the same for Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 at a given nominal size, so a Sch 80 socket slips over Sch 40 pipe of that size. The joint's pressure rating is then limited by the Sch 40 pipe, not the fitting. The dark grey color is how crews tell the Sch 80 fitting from white Sch 40 on site.
7) Is a reducing coupling the right way to step down pipe size, or should I use a bushing or reducer?
A socket reducing coupling does it in one joint with two solvent-cemented sockets, and it's the simplest choice when you're joining two pipe lengths of different size end to end. A bushing is what you reach for when you need to reduce inside an existing fitting socket rather than between two pipe ends. For a 4501R, both ends take pipe, nothing threads into it.
8) What part number do I order for a 4 inch Schedule 80 PVC socket coupling?
The straight 4 inch is CA01700. If you're stepping down from 4 inch, the reducers are CA01750 (4" x 3"), CA01800 (4" x 2-1/2") and CA01850 (4" x 2").
9) Does PVC Schedule 80 hold up for underground irrigation mains?
Irrigation is one of the listed uses. PVC won't rust, scale, pit or corrode, and Schedule 80 PVC has the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of the major thermoplastics used for piping, which is why it gets specified for buried mains and industrial lines over Sch 40.
10) Is the Nibco 4501 the same thing as a Chemtrol coupling?
Yes. Chemtrol is a NIBCO brand, and the 4501 and 4501R are the Chemtrol PVC Schedule 80 socket and reducing socket couplings. They also carry the universal part number 829, which is how some wholesalers cross-reference the item.
