The dark grey PVC socket union features female socket connections. This fitting has an FKM fluorocarbon seal which is suited to most applications involving mineral acids, salt solutions, chlorinated hydrocarbons and petroleum oils. Please refer to Chemtrol technical data sheets, chemical resistance guides and catalogs for engineering and installation information. PVC Schedule 80 has the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of any other major thermoplastic material used for piping. Chemtrol® PVC fittings are lightweight, easy to install, maintenance-free, and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. Chemtrol® premium line of plastic fittings is backed by a 1-year limited warranty. Nibco CA19900 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) How hot can a Nibco 4533 PVC Schedule 80 union run?
Maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F. Above that, PVC loses pressure rating fast, so hot water or steam service needs a different material such as CPVC or metal. The union is also not to be used or pressure tested with compressed air or other gases.
2) Is the Nibco 4533 union threaded or solvent weld?
Solvent weld. Both ends are female sockets (S x S), so the pipe slips into the union and is cemented with PVC primer and solvent cement. If you need a threaded connection at that point, this is the wrong end configuration; look for a FIPT x FIPT union instead.
3) What chemicals can the FKM seal in this PVC union handle?
The 4533 carries an FKM fluoroelastomer (Viton-type) O-ring, which suits most mineral acids, salt solutions, chlorinated hydrocarbons and petroleum oils. That is the reason to choose FKM over the standard EPDM seal on a chemical feed or industrial line. Check the Chemtrol chemical resistance guide for your specific media before committing.
4) Can I use this PVC union on a potable water system?
Yes. The 4533 is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it is listed as lead-free, which is what an inspector looks for on drinking water piping. It also meets ASTM F1970 for schedule 80 PVC fittings.
5) Will a Schedule 80 union fit Schedule 40 PVC pipe?
Yes. Sch 80 and Sch 40 PVC share the same outside diameters, so the 4533 socket accepts Sch 40 pipe of the same nominal size. Sch 80 has the thicker wall and higher pressure rating, so the assembly is limited by whichever component is weaker, which will be the Sch 40 pipe.
6) Why put a union in a PVC line instead of a coupling?
A solvent welded coupling is permanent; cutting it out is the only way back. The 4533 union breaks apart at the nut so you can pull a pump, valve or strainer for service and reconnect without recutting pipe. Standard practice is a union on each side of any serviceable device.
7) Is this union suitable for an irrigation main or an industrial process line?
Both. The 4533 is listed for commercial plumbing, industrial and irrigation service. The FKM seal is the deciding factor for industrial chemical lines; for plain water irrigation an EPDM-sealed union of the same body is usually the cheaper spec.
8) What color is the Nibco 4533 union, and will it match my existing PVC fittings?
Dark grey, which is the standard color for Schedule 80 PVC. If your existing pipe is white, that is Schedule 40 and the union will still socket onto it at the same nominal size; the color difference is just the schedule.
