Nibco CA19905 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Nibco 4533E EPDM union on a hot water line?
Maximum service temperature on the 4533E is 140 degrees F, so it is not a hot water fitting in the domestic sense. Standard domestic hot water distribution runs above that, and PVC loses pressure rating as temperature climbs. Keep it on cold and ambient-temperature liquid service, and note the EPDM seal is chemically resistant but is not recommended for petroleum oils or most strong acids.
2) Is the Nibco 4533E union threaded or solvent weld?
Solvent weld, both ends. The S x S designation means socket by socket, so each end is a female socket that takes the pipe with PVC primer and cement. There are no threads on this one. If you need to break into a threaded line, you either transition with a male adapter ahead of the union or specify a threaded union instead.
3) Should I get the EPDM union or a Viton one for my chemical feed line?
The seal material is the whole decision, and the body is the same PVC either way. EPDM on the 4533E has good abrasion and tear resistance plus strong chemical resistance in general, but it is not recommended for petroleum oils or most strong acids. Hydrocarbons, fuel, oil, and aggressive acid service are where EPDM fails and a fluoroelastomer seal is specified instead. For water, most dilute chemical, and irrigation service, EPDM is the normal choice. Check the fluid against the Chemtrol chemical resistance data before committing.
4) Will a Schedule 80 union fit my Schedule 40 PVC pipe?
Yes. Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 PVC share the same outside diameters at a given nominal size, so the 4533E sockets take Sch 40 pipe of the matching size. Schedule 80 is the heavier wall, so the assembly is limited by whichever component is rated lowest, which will be the Sch 40 pipe. The dark grey color is how Sch 80 is identified in the field against white Sch 40.
5) Why put a union in a PVC line instead of just a coupling?
A solvent-welded coupling is permanent; cutting it out is the only way back in. The 4533E union takes apart at the nut, so a pump, valve, strainer, or meter downstream can be pulled for service and reinstalled without cutting pipe or re-cementing. Put one on each side of anything that will eventually come out. The tradeoff is that a union has an elastomer seal, here EPDM, and a seal is a wear item a coupling does not have.
6) Which Nibco 4533E part number do I order for a 1 inch line?
For 1 inch, the part number is CA19905. The common sizes run CA19805 for 1/2 inch, CA19855 for 3/4 inch, CA19905 for 1 inch, CA19955 for 1-1/4 inch, CA20005 for 1-1/2 inch and CA20055 for 2 inch. Size is the only thing that changes; the EPDM seal and socket by socket ends are the same across the range.
7) Do I need anything besides the union to make up the joint?
The union ships complete as a three-piece assembly with the EPDM seal in place. What you supply is the PVC primer and solvent cement for the two socket joints. No thread sealant, no tape, and do not put pipe dope on the union nut or the seal face. The nut hand tightens against the seal; wrenching it is how the plastic gets cracked.
8) Will PVC Schedule 80 hold up in an industrial or irrigation system compared to other plastic pipe?
PVC Schedule 80 has the highest long term hydrostatic strength of any major thermoplastic used for piping, and the fittings will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is the reason it gets specified for industrial and irrigation work over metal. The 4533E is listed for commercial plumbing, industrial and irrigation service. The limits to plan around are the 140 degree F service temperature ceiling and the liquid-only restriction.
