1) What is the temperature limit on this PVC union?
Maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F. That rules it out for hot water service, boiler makeup, condensate or steam. PVC also loses pressure capability as it approaches that ceiling, so for hot lines you want a different material entirely, not a larger PVC size.
2) Will the FKM seal in this union hold up to acids and chlorinated solvents?
The seat seal is FKM fluoroelastomer, which Nibco lists as suited to most mineral acids, salt solutions, chlorinated hydrocarbons and petroleum oils. That is why you would pick the FKM version over an EPDM-sealed union. For any specific chemical and concentration, check it against the Chemtrol chemical resistance data before you commit the system.
3) Can I use this union on potable water in a commercial building?
Yes. The union is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it is listed lead-free, so it is acceptable for potable water within its 140 degree F cold-water limit. It also carries ASTM F1970. Typical use is commercial plumbing, industrial process, and irrigation.
4) Can I air test a PVC Schedule 80 line that has this union in it?
No. Do not use or test this fitting with compressed air or other gases. Pressure test with water only. Air testing thermoplastic pipe stores energy in the line and a failure is violent, not a leak.
5) Is this the grey Schedule 80 PVC, or the white Schedule 40?
Dark grey Schedule 80 PVC. Schedule 80 has a heavier wall than Sch 40 and, per Nibco, the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of any major thermoplastic piping material. The grey color is the normal visual tell for Sch 80 on a jobsite; white usually means Sch 40. Threaded Sch 80 is what you want when the joint has to come apart for service.
6) Why use a union here instead of just a threaded coupling?
A coupling is permanent in practice, you cannot unscrew it in the middle of a fixed run without turning pipe. This three-piece union gives you a break point: back off the nut and the two halves separate in place. Put one on each side of a pump, strainer, valve or meter so the equipment comes out without cutting the line. It is the same female NPT connection on both ends, so it drops into a threaded run as a fitting swap.
7) Can I thread this PVC union onto metal pipe?
It will thread onto male NPT steel or brass, since the union ends are standard female NPT. Two cautions on plastic-to-metal: use PTFE tape or a plastic-safe thread sealant, hand tighten plus roughly one to two turns with a strap wrench, and do not over-torque, because a metal male thread acts as a wedge and will split a PVC female socket. Support the metal side so its weight and thermal movement are not carried by the fitting.
8) Does this union match the rest of my Chemtrol Sch 80 system?
It does. The 4533-3-3 is a Chemtrol fitting, which is a NIBCO brand, in dark grey Sch 80 PVC, so it lines up with the rest of a Chemtrol Sch 80 run on material, schedule and color. For facilities standardizing a plant or irrigation system, pipe size 1/4 inch through 3 inch is covered with the same FKM seal throughout.
