Nibco CA07200 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Nibco Chemtrol 4507-3-3 PVC elbow thread onto pipe, or does it get solvent welded?
It threads. The 4507-3-3 is a female-by-female NPT elbow, so it screws onto male-threaded pipe ends or male adapters on both sides. No solvent cement joint here. If you want a cemented socket connection instead, you need a socket (slip) Schedule 80 elbow, not this one.
2) Can I run hot water through a Schedule 80 PVC threaded elbow?
Maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F. That rules out most domestic hot water recirculation and any process line running hotter. For hot service you'd move to CPVC or metal. Also note pressure ratings on any PVC fitting fall off as temperature climbs toward that 140 degree limit.
3) Is this PVC elbow approved for potable water?
The Chemtrol 90 degree Schedule 80 elbow is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, which are the potable water certifications inspectors look for, and it is listed as a lead-free application. It also meets ASTM D2467 for Schedule 80 PVC socket-type fittings.
4) Can I use this PVC fitting on a compressed air line?
No. Nibco states plainly not to use or test this fitting with compressed air or other gases. PVC fails brittle and throws fragments under gas pressure. Keep it on liquid service only, and pressure test with water.
5) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 4507-3-3 Schedule 80 threaded elbow come in?
Ten sizes, 1/4 inch through 4 inch: 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3 and 4 inch. Part numbers run CA07050 for the 1/4 inch up to CA07500 for the 4 inch. Both ends are the same size on every one, so it's a straight-size 90.
6) Will a Schedule 80 PVC elbow work with my Schedule 40 PVC pipe?
On a threaded connection, yes. NPT threads are the same regardless of schedule, so a Schedule 80 female threaded elbow will accept a threaded Schedule 40 male end. The catch is that the system only holds to the weakest component, and Schedule 40 pipe is thinner walled, so rate the run off the Sch 40 pipe. Note also that threading Schedule 40 PVC is generally not permitted because of the reduced wall.
7) Do I need thread sealant on this fitting, and can I use pipe dope?
Threaded PVC joints need a sealant on the male threads. PTFE tape is the standard choice for plastic-to-plastic; many petroleum-based pipe dopes attack PVC, so check the dope is listed as PVC safe before you use it. Do not overtighten either. Nibco directs installers to the Chemtrol technical data sheets and chemical resistance guides for installation detail, and those also tell you whether your process fluid is compatible with PVC at all.
8) Will this grey PVC elbow match the fittings already on my existing Schedule 80 system?
Color-wise yes, it is the standard dark grey used for Schedule 80 PVC, so it blends with an existing grey Sch 80 run. What matters more for a match is the connection: this one is female threaded on both ends. If the rest of your system is socket-cemented, you'd need male adapters to tie in, or a socket elbow instead.
