1) How does a Spg x S flush bushing install compared to a regular reducer bushing?
The Nibco 4518 is a flush socket reducer bushing with a spigot (male) end on the large side and a socket (female) end on the small side. The spigot slips inside the socket of the larger Schedule 80 fitting and seats flush, so it does not add length to the run the way a threaded or raised bushing does. Both connections are solvent weld, so you prime and cement the spigot into the larger fitting and the reduced pipe into the socket.
2) What pipe size reductions does the Nibco 4518 PVC bushing come in?
Reductions run from 1/2 x 1/4 inch all the way to 12 x 10 inch. Small sizes include 3/4 x 1/2, 1 x 3/4, 1 x 1/2, 1-1/4 x 1, 1-1/4 x 1/2 and the full 1-1/2 and 2 inch ranges down to 1/2 inch. Larger jumps are covered too, including 3 x 1, 4 x 2, 6 x 2, 6 x 4, 8 x 6, 10 x 8, 10 x 6, 12 x 10 and 12 x 8, so you can drop two or three sizes in one fitting rather than stacking reducers.
3) Can I use this PVC Schedule 80 bushing on a potable water line?
Yes. The 4518 bushing is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and is listed lead-free, which is what a potable water system requires. It is also used in commercial plumbing, industrial process and irrigation systems.
4) What is the maximum temperature for this Schedule 80 PVC bushing?
140 degrees F is the maximum service temperature. Above that, PVC loses pressure rating fast, so hot water, steam or high-temp process lines need a different material. Also do not use it on compressed air or other gases, and never pressure test it with air.
5) Will this bushing fit Schedule 40 PVC fittings, or only Schedule 80?
The 4518 is a Schedule 80 bushing built to ASTM D2467, the standard for Sch 80 socket-type PVC fittings. Socket and spigot dimensions follow iron pipe size, so the pipe OD matches Sch 40, but the fitting itself is the heavier Sch 80 wall in dark grey. If your spec calls out Sch 80 fittings, this is the one; a Sch 40 job is normally specified with white ASTM D2466 fittings.
6) Do I need a threaded bushing instead of this one?
Only if you are transitioning to threaded pipe or a threaded valve or device. Both ends of the 4518 are for solvent cementing, spigot on the large side and socket on the small side, so it reduces between two cemented PVC joints. For a threaded takeoff you want a Spg x FIPT bushing rather than this Spg x S version.
7) Will PVC Schedule 80 fittings corrode in a chemical or wastewater system?
PVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is why Sch 80 is common in industrial and chemical service. Schedule 80 PVC also has the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of the major thermoplastic piping materials. Chemical compatibility still depends on the specific media, so check a PVC chemical resistance guide for what you are running.
8) Is this the same as Nibco part 837?
Yes. The Chemtrol/Nibco 4518 flush socket reducer bushing carries universal part number 837. Order by the size combination you need, for example CA12350 is the 2 x 1-1/2 inch and CA13150 is the 4 x 3 inch.
