The dark grey PVC flush socket reducer bushing features a male end (spigot) and a female pipe thread connection. Chemtrol® fittings connect PVC piping lengths together with solvent cementing, threading or flanging to create a highly reliable, leak-free system. Please refer to Chemtrol technical data sheets, chemical resistance guides and catalogs for engineering and installation information. PVC Schedule 80 has the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of any other major thermoplastic material used for piping. Chemtrol® PVC fittings are lightweight, easy to install, maintenance-free, and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. Chemtrol® premium line of plastic fittings is backed by a 1-year limited warranty. Because Chemtrol® is a NIBCO brand the flow-control fittings are unsurpassed in quality, performance and longevity.

Nibco CA14250 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What pipe size reductions can I get in this Nibco Schedule 80 spigot x FPT bushing?
Reductions run from 1/2 inch x 1/4 inch up to 4 inch x 2 inch. The full range includes 3/4 x 1/2, 3/4 x 1/4, 1 x 3/4, 1 x 1/2, 1-1/4 x 1, 1-1/4 x 3/4, 1-1/4 x 1/2, 1-1/2 x 1-1/4, 1-1/2 x 1, 1-1/2 x 3/4, 1-1/2 x 1/2, 2 x 1-1/2, 2 x 1-1/4, 2 x 1, 2 x 3/4, 2 x 1/2, 2-1/2 x 2, 2-1/2 x 1-1/2, 2-1/2 x 1, 3 x 2-1/2, 3 x 2, 3 x 1-1/2, 3 x 1, 4 x 3, and 4 x 2-1/2. The first number is the spigot side, the second is the female thread.
2) Can I use this PVC bushing on a hot water line?
No. Maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F, which rules out domestic hot water distribution and any process line running hotter. Keep it on cold or ambient temperature service. Remember that PVC pressure ratings also fall off as temperature climbs toward that limit.
3) Is this Nibco bushing approved for potable water?
It is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it is listed as a lead-free application, so it is suitable for potable water systems as well as commercial plumbing, industrial process and irrigation work.
4) Will a Schedule 80 spigot bushing fit into a Schedule 40 PVC socket fitting?
Yes, as far as dimensions go. Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 PVC share the same outside diameters and the same socket dimensions at a given nominal size, so the spigot end of the 4518-3 cements into a Schedule 40 socket of the matching size. The difference is wall thickness, so the pressure rating of the assembly is governed by the lighter Schedule 40 component. The bushing itself is made to ASTM D2467, the Schedule 80 socket fitting standard.
5) What is the difference between a flush spigot bushing and a regular reducer bushing?
A flush spigot bushing has a male end machined to pipe OD that slides into another fitting's socket and seats flush, rather than a bushing that drops inside a socket with a shoulder sitting proud. Practically, it lets you reduce right at an existing socket fitting instead of cutting in a reducing coupling or tee. On the 4518-3 the reduced side is female NPT, so pair it with a male adapter or threaded nipple; if you need the branch cemented instead of threaded, use a spigot x socket bushing.
6) How do I install the threaded side of this PVC bushing without cracking it?
Thread plastic to plastic or metal male into the female NPT side hand tight plus roughly one to two turns with PTFE tape, and do not overtighten. Overtorquing a threaded PVC socket is the usual cause of splits. Use a male threaded nipple or adapter, never a female fitting, since this side is female NPT. The spigot end is joined the other way, with primer and solvent cement into the mating socket.
7) Is this bushing suitable for an irrigation main or a chemical process line?
Yes for irrigation, and it is listed for industrial service as well. PVC Schedule 80 has the highest long term hydrostatic strength of the major thermoplastics used for piping, and it will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. For a chemical line, check the media against the Chemtrol chemical resistance guide before committing, since PVC is not compatible with every solvent.
8) What color is this Nibco Schedule 80 bushing, and how do I tell it from Schedule 40 on the shelf?
It is dark grey, which is the standard color for Schedule 80 PVC pressure fittings. White PVC in the same nominal size is typically Schedule 40, so color alone is a quick sort on a jobsite, though the printed markings on the fitting are the authoritative check.
9) What is the Nibco part number for a 2 inch x 1 inch Schedule 80 spigot x FPT bushing?
The 2 inch x 1 inch is MPN CA14250. Neighboring sizes: 2 x 1-1/2 is CA14150, 2 x 1-1/4 is CA14200, 2 x 3/4 is CA14300 and 2 x 1/2 is CA14350. All are the 4518-3 flush spigot by female thread bushing in dark grey PVC.
