Nibco CB12600 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) How does the Nibco 5118-3 CPVC bushing connect - is it glued or threaded?
Both. The 5118-3 flush bushing has a spigot (male) end that solvent cements into a Schedule 80 CPVC socket fitting, and a female NPT thread on the reducing side that takes a threaded male pipe or nipple. So one joint is cemented, the other is screwed together. That makes it the fitting to use when you need to step down from cemented CPVC pipe into a threaded connection such as a gauge, valve tailpiece, or metal nipple.
2) What reducing sizes does the Nibco 5118-3 CPVC flush bushing come in?
Twenty-one reductions, from 1/2 x 1/4 inch up to 4 x 3 inch. The full range runs 1/2x1/4, 3/4x1/2, 1x3/4, 1x1/2, 1-1/4x1, 1-1/4x3/4, 1-1/4x1/2, 1-1/2x1-1/4, 1-1/2x1, 1-1/2x3/4, 1-1/2x1/2, 2x1-1/2, 2x1-1/4, 2x1, 2x3/4, 2x1/2, 2-1/2x2, 3x2-1/2, 3x2, 4x3 and 4x2. The first number is the spigot side that cements into the larger socket; the second is the female NPT thread.
3) Can this Corzan CPVC bushing be used on potable water lines?
Yes. The Chemtrol Corzan CPVC bushing is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it is listed as lead-free. It is used on commercial plumbing, industrial, and irrigation systems.
4) Can I pressure test a CPVC Schedule 80 line with air?
No. Do not use or test these CPVC fittings with compressed air or other gases. Thermoplastic systems store energy when charged with gas and can fail violently. Hydrostatic test with water only.
5) Will this bushing fit standard Schedule 80 CPVC fittings, and what standard does it meet?
It is built to ASTM F439, the standard for Schedule 80 CPVC socket-type fittings, so the spigot seats in any Schedule 80 CPVC socket of the matching nominal size. Use CPVC solvent cement, not PVC cement, on the socket joint.
6) Why use a flush bushing instead of a reducing coupling or a reducer bushing that sticks out?
A flush bushing seats inside the hub of the larger fitting, so it adds no length to the run. That matters when you are reducing at a tee or valve in a tight rack and cannot afford the extra takeout of a coupling plus a reducer. The 5118-3 goes straight into the socket of the Schedule 80 CPVC fitting you already have and gives you a female NPT thread at the smaller size.
7) What is the temperature limit on the Nibco 5118-3 CPVC bushing?
Maximum service temperature is 210 degrees F. CPVC holds pressure at temperatures where PVC cannot, which is why it gets specified for hot water and heated process lines. Remember that thermoplastic pressure ratings fall off as temperature rises, so size the system to the derated pressure at your operating temperature, not the ambient rating.
8) Will this light grey bushing match my existing CPVC piping?
The bushing is light grey, the standard Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 color, so it matches grey Corzan and Chemtrol Schedule 80 systems. If your building runs the orange/tan CTS CPVC used for residential hot and cold water, that is a different pipe system with different dimensions and this Schedule 80 fitting is not the part for it.
9) Does the threaded side of this bushing need thread sealant?
The reducing side is a female NPT thread, so it takes a male NPT pipe or nipple with PTFE tape or a sealant compatible with CPVC. Do not overtighten; plastic female threads split when wrenched past hand tight plus a couple of turns. The spigot side is solvent cemented and takes no sealant.
10) Is CPVC Schedule 80 suitable for buried irrigation or underground runs?
Yes. Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 is noted for underground performance and it will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and irrigation is one of its listed system uses. That corrosion resistance is the main reason it gets chosen over metal for buried and chemical service.
