1) What is the difference between a long radius combination tee-wye and a regular sanitary tee for a PVC DWV drain line?
The Nibco 4812-LR is a combination wye and 1/4 bend built as one fitting, with the branch swept on a long radius instead of the tight turn a sanitary tee makes. That sweep is why it gets used where flow has to change direction and keep moving, typically horizontal-to-vertical drainage and cleanout runs. Its bend angle is 90 degrees (1/4 bend), so the branch leaves square to the run while the inside of the turn stays gradual. A sanitary tee turns harder in a shorter laying length; if you have room for the long radius, the 4812-LR is the one that lets a snake pass through the turn.
2) Does the Nibco 4812-LR tee-wye glue on, or does it thread?
Solvent weld, all three openings. The 4812-LR is a hub x hub x hub fitting, meaning each opening is a socket that the pipe slips into and gets cemented with PVC primer and solvent cement. There are no threads on it, so you cannot spin it onto a male adapter. If the connection you are making needs to come apart later, put a threaded adapter or a trap adapter downstream of it rather than looking for a threaded version of this fitting.
3) Can I get a reducing long radius tee-wye so a 2 inch branch ties into a 3 inch drain?
Yes. Alongside the straight sizes, the 4812-LR comes in reducing configurations where the branch is smaller than the run: 3 x 3 x 2 (K157350), 3 x 3 x 1-1/2 (K157370), 4 x 4 x 3 (K157450), 4 x 4 x 2 (K157430), 2 x 2 x 1-1/2 (K157150), and 2 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 (K157250), which reduces on the outlet as well as the branch. Straight-size runs are 1-1/2, 2, 3, and 4 inch. Order by the full three-number call-out so the branch lands on the right side of the fitting.
4) Is this PVC tee-wye approved for potable water or a pressure line?
No. The 4812-LR is a DWV fitting, for drain, waste and vent only. It is not a pressure fitting and carries no pressure rating here. It also must not be tested or used with compressed air or other gases, which rules out air-testing the system with this fitting in the line. For supply work you need a pressure-rated fitting, not a DWV pattern.
5) What standards does the Nibco 4812-LR PVC DWV fitting meet for an inspector?
The fitting is made to ASTM D2665 and D3311, and it is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF U.P. Certified. D3311 is the drain-fitting pattern standard, which is what tells an inspector the fitting geometry conforms; D2665 covers PVC DWV pipe and fittings. That combination is what commercial and residential plumbing inspections normally want to see stamped on a DWV fitting.
6) Can this PVC tee-wye handle a dishwasher or laundry discharge, or does hot water damage it?
Maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F. Normal fixture and appliance drainage sits under that, so a laundry standpipe or dishwasher discharge into a properly vented drain is within the fitting's range. Sustained higher-temperature discharge, such as a commercial dish machine or a boiler blowdown line, exceeds it and needs a different material.
7) Which Nibco part number do I order for a 4 inch long radius combination tee-wye?
For a full-size 4 inch run and 4 inch branch, the part is MPN K157400. If the branch is smaller, order K157450 for 4 x 4 x 3 or K157430 for 4 x 4 x 2. All are the 4812-LR pattern with hub sockets on every opening.
8) Do I need anything else besides the fitting to make up a PVC DWV joint?
The 4812-LR ships as the fitting alone. To make the joint you need PVC primer and PVC solvent cement rated for DWV, plus a way to cut the pipe square and deburr the end. No gaskets, no O-rings, no clamps are part of the connection, since every opening is a solvent weld socket. Nibco publishes plastic fittings installation instructions covering cement cure times before the line sees flow.
9) Will PVC DWV fittings corrode or scale in a waste line?
PVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and it holds up to the chemicals that go down a waste line. That is the practical reason it gets specified over metal DWV in multi-family and institutional risers, where cast iron and galvanized eventually give up. The 4812-LR is white PVC throughout.
