1) What size pipe does the Nibco 5812-LR long radius combination tee-wye fit?
The 5812-LR is made in straight runs of 1-1/2, 2, 3 and 4 inch, plus reducing configurations: 2 x 2 x 1-1/2, 2 x 1-1/2 x 2, 2 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2, 3 x 3 x 2, 3 x 3 x 1-1/2, 4 x 4 x 2 and 4 x 4 x 3. All are Schedule 40 ABS DWV with solvent weld hubs on all three openings, so they take standard Schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe of the matching size. Read the reducing sizes as run x run x branch, so a 3 x 3 x 2 keeps a 3 inch line continuous and branches 2 inch.
2) Can I use an ABS combination tee-wye on a horizontal drain line, or do I need a sanitary tee?
A combination wye and 1/8 bend like the 5812-LR is the fitting for horizontal-to-horizontal and horizontal-to-vertical drainage branches, because the sweep turns flow into the direction of travel instead of dumping it in at a right angle. The long radius version makes that sweep even gentler, which helps drain cleaning cables and rodding get through the branch. A sanitary tee is the fitting for a vertical-to-horizontal connection (a fixture arm entering a stack) and should not be laid on its back in a horizontal run. Overall the 5812-LR makes a 90 degree (1/4 bend) change of direction from the branch into the run.
3) Will a black ABS DWV tee-wye connect to my existing cast iron or copper drain line?
Not directly. ABS DWV joins to itself by solvent cementing or threading; to tie into steel, copper or cast iron you need a transition fitting or an approved mechanical coupling at the changeover. The 5812-LR itself is all solvent weld hubs on the run and the branch, so plan the transition at the pipe, not at this fitting.
4) Which reducing tee-wye do I order to branch a 1-1/2 inch fixture drain off a 2 inch line?
Order the 2 x 2 x 1-1/2 (part I157150), which keeps the 2 inch run full size and reduces only the branch to 1-1/2 inch. Do not confuse it with the 2 x 1-1/2 x 2 (I157200), where the reduction is in the run itself, or the 2 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 (I157250), which reduces both the outlet side of the run and the branch. Same logic at 3 inch: 3 x 3 x 1-1/2 is I157370 and 3 x 3 x 2 is I157350.
5) Can I pressure test an ABS DWV system with air?
No. Do not test or use ABS DWV fittings with compressed air or other gases. Use a water test on the drain, waste and vent system. This applies to the whole 5812-LR range regardless of size.
6) Is ABS or PVC the right drain fitting for my job?
Pick by what is already in the building and what the local code allows, and do not mix the two on a solvent joint. The Nibco 5812-LR is ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene), black, and rated for a service temperature of -40 to 180 degrees F, with resistance to everything from sewage to common household chemicals. It goes together with one-step ABS cement, no primer, which is why it is common on residential and light commercial DWV. PVC DWV is white and takes primer plus PVC cement. If your existing stack is black ABS, stay with ABS.

8) What is the difference between a long radius and a standard combination tee-wye in ABS?
The turn radius. A long radius combination tee-wye sweeps the branch into the run over a longer arc than the standard pattern, so flow transitions more gradually and a snake or cable is less likely to hang up at the fitting. The trade-off is space: the long radius body takes up more length in the run and more height off it, so on a tight joist bay or a crowded chase the standard combination wye may be the only one that fits. Both make the same 90 degree (1/4 bend) branch connection.
9) Do I need threaded adapters, or does this Nibco tee-wye glue straight on?
All three openings are hubs, so the fitting solvent welds directly onto Schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe with ABS cement, no threads and no additional adapters. If a threaded connection is needed at that point (a cleanout or a trap adapter, say), that gets made with a separate ABS male or female adapter downstream of this fitting.
10) Is this ABS tee-wye approved for commercial buildings or only houses?
