Nibco I098250 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use a Nibco 5811 ABS sanitary tee on a vent line as well as a drain?
Yes. The 5811 sanitary tee is a DWV fitting, meaning drain, waste and vent, so it is used on all three. The swept branch is what makes it a drain fitting rather than a straight tee: the sweep carries waste down into the run instead of dumping it in at a right angle. On horizontal-to-vertical drainage the sweep must point in the direction of flow. A sanitary tee is not the fitting for a horizontal-to-horizontal drainage turn, where a wye and eighth bend is the normal choice.
2) Is the Nibco 5811 tee glued or threaded?
Solvent weld. All three openings are hubs (hub x hub x hub), so the pipe slips into the socket and is joined with ABS cement. There are no threads on the fitting. If you need to transition to steel, copper, or cast iron, that is done with a separate transition fitting, not at this tee.
3) Will the Nibco 5811 sanitary tee fit Schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe?
Yes, it is a Schedule 40 ABS DWV fitting, so it sockets over standard Schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe of the matching nominal size. Sizes run 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 3, 4 and 6 inch on the straight runs. Note that DWV pipe is not the same as pressure pipe: do not use this on a water supply line.
4) I need a 2 inch drain with a 1-1/2 inch branch. Does Nibco make that sanitary tee?
Yes, 2" x 2" x 1-1/2" is MPN I098300, with the reduction on the branch. If you need the reduction on one of the run openings instead, 2" x 1-1/2" x 2" is I098400, and if you want both the second run opening and the branch at 1-1/2 inch, that is I098450. Read the size as run x run x branch, and check which opening you actually need reduced before you order, since all three combinations exist.
5) Can I tie a 2 inch lavatory branch into a 3 inch ABS stack with this tee?
Yes. The 3" x 3" x 2" reducing sanitary tee, MPN I098800, runs 3 inch through and takes a 2 inch branch, so you do not need a bushing. Smaller branches are covered too: 3" x 3" x 1-1/2" is I098850. On the 4 inch run there are 4" x 4" x 3" (I099250), 4" x 4" x 2" (I099300) and 4" x 4" x 1-1/2" (I099350), and on 6 inch there is 6" x 6" x 4" (I099450).
6) Is the Nibco 5811 ABS tee approved for potable-adjacent plumbing work and what standards does it meet?
The 5811 sanitary tee is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and is NSF U.P. Certified, and it is UL Listed 94V-0 for flammability. It is manufactured to ASTM D2665, ASTM D3965, and ASTM D2661 and D3311. Those are the ABS DWV pipe and fitting standards inspectors look for on a commercial or institutional job.
7) Can I pressure test an ABS DWV system with air?
No. Nibco states plainly not to test or use ABS DWV fittings with compressed air or other gases. Test with water. Air testing plastic drainage is how these fittings fail violently, and it will void the basis of the certification you installed to.
8) Will this black ABS tee match the existing drain lines in my building, or do I need PVC?
The 5811 is black ABS, which is the black DWV pipe. If your existing drainage is white or cream PVC, this is the wrong material: ABS cement and PVC cement are not interchangeable and the two plastics are not solvent welded to each other. Match ABS to ABS. Where you genuinely have to join the two systems, that is done mechanically with a transition coupling, not with cement.
9) What temperature can an ABS DWV sanitary tee handle, and is it OK for a commercial kitchen or laundry drain?
Service temperature runs -40F to 180F, which covers dishwasher, laundry and commercial kitchen discharge as well as unheated crawlspace and cold-climate runs. ABS also resists everything from sewage to ordinary commercial and household chemical formulations. It is rated for both commercial and residential plumbing systems.
10) Do I need anything besides the tee and cement to install a Nibco 5811?
For an ABS-to-ABS joint, the tee plus ABS solvent cement is the whole joint. ABS is a one-step cement, no separate purple primer required the way PVC drainage usually is. What you may need on top of that: transition fittings if the tee has to meet steel, copper, or cast iron, and reducing bushings only if you did not order the reducing tee that already has the branch size you need.
11) What is the largest ABS sanitary tee Nibco offers in the 5811, and can I use it on a building drain?
6 inch is the top of the range, offered as a full-size 6 inch (MPN I099400) and as 6" x 6" x 4" (I099450), which is the usual arrangement for bringing a 4 inch stack or branch into a 6 inch building drain. Below that the full-size sizes are 4 inch (I099200), 3 inch (I098700), 2 inch (I098250), 1-1/2 inch (I098050) and 1-1/4 inch (I098000).
12) I have a 1-1/2 inch ABS waste line and need to pick up a 1-1/4 inch branch. Which sanitary tee do I order?
1-1/2" x 1-1/2" x 1-1/4", MPN I098100, keeps the run at 1-1/2 inch and reduces only the branch. If instead the reduction belongs on the second run opening, order 1-1/2" x 1-1/4" x 1-1/2", MPN I098150. Both are solvent weld hubs on all three openings.
