The ABS DWV test tee features a hub x hub x female NPT thread connection and provides a means for testing the tightness of the system by assessing potential leakage. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco I113050 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size pipe does the Nibco 5811-14-V ABS test tee come in?
The 5811-14-V test tee is made in four pipe sizes: 1-1/2 inch (MPN I113030), 2 inch (I113050), 3 inch (I113070), and 4 inch (I113090). Size the tee to the DWV branch it goes into, not to the cleanout plug you intend to thread in, since the female threaded port matches the tee size.
2) Does a Nibco ABS test tee come with the plug, or do I have to order that separately?
No plug is included. The 5811-14-V is catalogued as a test tee without plug, so the FIPT branch ships open and you supply the threaded cleanout or test plug in the matching size. Plan on ordering one plug per tee.
3) How do the three openings on the 5811-14-V test tee connect, solvent weld or thread?
Two of them are hubs and one is a female pipe thread: hub x hub x FIPT. The run gets solvent cemented to ABS DWV pipe, and the branch takes a threaded plug or fitting. ABS DWV can also be tied to steel, copper, or cast iron through transition fittings if the test tee sits at a material change.
4) Will a Nibco ABS test tee fit schedule 40 DWV pipe?
Yes. The 5811-14-V is a schedule 40 ABS DWV fitting, so the hubs take standard schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe in the matching nominal size (1-1/2, 2, 3, or 4 inch). It is a drain, waste and vent fitting only, not a pressure fitting.
5) Can I air test a DWV system through this ABS test tee?
No. Nibco states plainly not to test or use these fittings with compressed air or other gases. The test tee is there for a water (hydrostatic) test of the drainage system, with a plug in the threaded branch holding the column of water. Use air on ABS DWV and you are outside the manufacturer's instruction.
6) Is the Nibco ABS test tee approved for potable-adjacent plumbing code work?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and is NSF U.P. Certified, and it meets ASTM D2661, D2665, D3311, and D3965 plus CSA B181.1. It is also UL Listed 94V-0 for flammability. That is the package a plumbing inspector or an institutional spec writer looks for on ABS DWV, and it is the same on every size.
7) What temperature range is ABS DWV fitting rated for, and can it take hot water discharge?
Service range is -40 F to 180 F. That covers dishwasher and laundry discharge in a residential or light commercial drain, and it covers unheated crawl spaces and attics at the cold end. Continuous discharge above 180 F, such as from some commercial kitchen or process equipment, is past the rating and needs a different material.
8) Should I use a test tee or a regular cleanout tee on a drain stack?
A test tee does both jobs. The hub x hub run keeps the drain line continuous while the female threaded branch gives you a capped port you can open for a hydrostatic test during rough-in and then leave in place as an accessible cleanout. A plain sanitary tee with a hub branch gives you no threaded access point, so if you want a testable and later rod-able opening at that spot, the test tee is the fitting to set.
9) Can I mix this black ABS test tee into an existing PVC DWV system?
The fitting is black ABS, and ABS and PVC take different solvent cements, so you do not simply glue one into the other. Where the test tee sits at a change of material, make the joint at the threaded branch or use a proper transition fitting. Within an all-ABS system it solvent cements straight in.
10) Is a straight size test tee the right fitting if my branch is smaller than the run?
No, and this is a common ordering mistake. The 5811-14-V is a straight size tee, meaning the threaded branch is the same nominal size as the run. If you need a smaller access port off a larger line, a straight size test tee will not give you that; look for a reducing configuration or reduce with a bushing at the threaded port.
11) Is the Nibco 5811-14-V test tee acceptable for commercial buildings or is it residential only?
Both. The fitting is listed for commercial and residential plumbing use on drain, waste and vent systems, which is why it is stocked in 3 and 4 inch as well as the smaller 1-1/2 and 2 inch sizes typical of fixture branches. For MRO and multi-family work it standardizes well since the same fitting covers stack cleanouts and branch test points.
12) Will ABS drain fittings hold up to bleach and other cleaning chemicals going down the line?
ABS resists a broad range of what goes into a drain, from sewage to household and commercial cleaning chemical formulations, across its full -40 F to 180 F service range. For janitorial closets and commercial kitchens on a DWV line, that is the relevant point. It is also light enough to hang and cut on site without special handling.
