The ABS DWV test tee features a hub x hub x cleanout with plug connection is used to test the "tightness" of the system by assessing potential leakage. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco I159100 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is a Nibco 5814 ABS test tee actually used for?
It's the fitting you build into a DWV stack so the system can be pressure tested for leaks before it's closed in. The branch is a threaded cleanout opening with a plug supplied, so once the test is done the plug goes back in and the same opening serves as a cleanout access point later. Nibco lists it as a straight size test tee with plug for drain, waste and vent service.
2) How do the two hub ends on the Nibco 5814 connect to ABS pipe?
Both run ends are solvent weld hubs, so they cement directly onto Schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe. The third opening is female threaded for the cleanout plug, giving a Hub x Hub x F configuration. No gaskets, no clamps.
3) Can I air test a DWV system with this ABS test tee?
No. Nibco states plainly not to test or use ABS DWV fittings with compressed air or other gases. Use a water (hydrostatic) test instead. This is the fitting's whole purpose, so getting the test medium right matters.
4) Does the Nibco 5814 test tee meet code standards for a plumbing inspection?
It's listed to ASTM D2661, D2665, D3311 and D3965, CSA B181.1, NSF/ANSI Standard 14 with NSF U.P. certification, and UL Listed 94V-0. Those are the markings an inspector looks for on ABS DWV, and the fitting is approved for both commercial and residential plumbing systems.
5) Can I tie ABS into an existing cast iron or copper drain line with this tee?
Not directly. Both hub ends of the 5814 are solvent weld for ABS pipe only. To join cast iron, steel or copper, run a short piece of ABS out of the tee and make the changeover with a transition fitting, which is how Nibco specifies connecting ABS DWV to other materials.
6) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 5814 test tee come in?
Four sizes: 1-1/2 inch (I159050), 2 inch (I159100), 3 inch (I159150) and 4 inch (I159250). All are straight size, meaning the branch matches the run, so a 3 inch tee gives you a 3 inch cleanout opening.
7) What temperature range can ABS DWV fittings handle?
Service temperature runs from -40 F to 180 F. That covers normal sanitary drainage and vent duty, including dishwasher and laundry discharge, but it is not a pressure or hot water supply fitting.
8) Is the plug included with the Nibco 5814 test tee or ordered separately?
The plug ships with the tee. The branch is female threaded, so the plug threads in rather than cementing, and it can be backed out later for rodding the line. Nibco classifies the fitting as a test tee with plug.
9) Will this black ABS tee match the DWV pipe already in my building?
It's black ABS, the standard color for ABS DWV, so it matches existing black ABS piping. If the building's drain lines are white, that's PVC DWV, and ABS fittings are not solvent cemented to PVC pipe. Check the pipe color before ordering.
