The PVC DWV adjustable closet flange features a plastic coated steel flange and a hub connection. The closet flange is secured to the floor of the dwelling so that a toilet can be affixed to it and allow for a pipe connection (under the floor) to continue the piping for evacuation of the used water. 1) Does the Nibco 4851-A closet flange glue onto the pipe or thread on?
It solvent welds. The 4851-A is a hub-end fitting, so the PVC DWV pipe goes inside the socket and is joined with primer and solvent cement. There are no threads on the pipe connection.
2) What is the difference between the 4" and the 4" x 3" Nibco 4851-A closet flange?
Both give you the standard toilet flange up top; the difference is what they land on below the floor. The straight 4 inch (MPN K355290) takes 4 inch DWV pipe in the hub. The 4 x 3 (MPN K355350) is the reducing version for a 3 inch closet bend. Pick by the pipe already in the floor, not by the toilet.
3) Can I use this PVC closet flange on a commercial job, and does it meet plumbing code standards?
It is rated for both commercial and residential plumbing. The fitting is made to ASTM D2665 and D3311, is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14, and carries NSF U.P. certification for drain, waste and vent service.
4) Can I substitute a 4" x 3" flange if my closet bend is 4 inch?
No. The 4 x 3 version (K355350) has a 3 inch hub and will not slip over 4 inch pipe. For a 4 inch bend order the straight 4 inch, MPN K355290.
5) Is the flange ring on the Nibco 4851-A metal or plastic?
Metal. The ring is plastic coated steel over a PVC hub, so you get the strength of a steel ring for the closet bolts with the coating guarding against rust, while the pipe connection stays all PVC.
6) What does "adjustable" mean on this Nibco closet flange?
The steel ring rotates on the PVC hub, so after the hub is cemented to the closet bend you can spin the ring to line the closet bolt slots up with the toilet and square it to the wall. That is the fix for a bend that came up slightly rotated.
7) Will this flange work with Schedule 40 PVC drain pipe?
Yes, the 4851-A is a Schedule 40 PVC DWV fitting, so it mates with standard Schedule 40 PVC DWV pipe of the matching size. Do not use it on pressure or supply piping.
