The PVC DWV flush closet flange without a pipe stop fits inside 4-inch DWV pipe and over 3-inch DWV pipe. The closet flange is secured to the floor of the dwelling so that a toilet can be affixed to it and allow for a pipe connection (under the floor) to continue the piping for evacuation of the used water. 1) How is this Nibco PVC closet flange joined to the drain pipe?
Solvent weld. The 4853-NS is a solvent cement joint to Schedule 40 PVC DWV pipe, not a gasketed or threaded connection, so you need PVC primer and cement and you only get one shot at alignment. Set the closet bolt slots square to the wall before the cement grabs.
2) What does "without pipe stop" mean on a PVC closet flange, and when do I want it?
No internal shoulder inside the socket, so the pipe can pass through the flange rather than bottoming out. That lets you set the flange at the finished floor height on a 4-inch riser cut flush, or sleeve it over a 3-inch stub, instead of being locked to the depth a pipe stop dictates. If your riser is cut long or the slab height is uncertain, the no-stop version gives you the room to adjust before you solvent weld.
3) Can I use a PVC closet flange on a commercial restroom job, or is it residential only?
Both are listed uses. The 4853-NS is specified for commercial and residential plumbing DWV service, and it carries ASTM D2665 and D3311, NSF/ANSI Standard 14, and NSF U.P. certification, which is typically what a spec or inspector asks for on drain, waste and vent fittings.
4) What is the temperature limit on this PVC DWV closet flange?
140 degrees F maximum service temperature. That is fine for toilet waste and normal DWV service. It also must not be tested or used with compressed air or other gases, so pressure test the system with water only.
5) Does the Nibco 4853-NS come with closet bolts or a wax ring?
The 4853-NS is the flange only. Closet bolts, a wax ring or gasket, floor anchors appropriate to your slab or subfloor, and PVC primer and cement all have to be bought separately to finish the toilet set.
6) Is a flush closet flange the right choice, or do I need an offset or raised type?
A flush flange like the 4853-NS mounts level with the finished floor directly over the riser, which is the standard situation. If the drain is not centered where the toilet needs to sit you need an offset closet flange instead, and if the finished floor was built up above the pipe you need a raised or spacer flange. The 4853-NS does not correct either condition.
7) Will this flange corrode or rust in a slab or wet floor?
PVC does not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is the usual reason it gets picked over a cast iron or brass flange in a slab or a wet commercial floor. Material is white PVC with high corrosion and chemical resistance.
