The ABS DWV flush closet flange features a pipe stop and fits inside 4-inch DWV pipe and over 3-inch DWV pipe. The flush closet flange also features a knockout to prevent debris from entering the draining system. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco I355720 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is this ABS closet flange approved for use on potable-adjacent commercial drainage, and what standards does it meet?
The 5853-KO is a DWV drain, waste and vent fitting rated for commercial and residential plumbing. It is manufactured to ASTM D2665, ASTM D3965, ASTM D2661 and D3311, is UL Listed 94V-0, meets NSF/ANSI Standard 14, and is NSF U.P. Certified. That combination is normally what an inspector or spec writer is looking for on a DWV submittal.
2) Can I glue this ABS flange onto PVC drain pipe?
No. This is an ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) fitting and it solvent welds to ABS DWV pipe. ABS and PVC are different resins and are not reliably solvent cemented to each other. If the existing stack is PVC, use a PVC flange or make the change with a proper transition. ABS DWV can be tied to steel, copper, or cast iron through transition fittings.
3) What is the knockout on the Nibco 5853-KO closet flange for?
The knockout is a molded closure in the flange body that keeps construction debris, mortar, and tile scrap out of the drain line during the rough-in and finish phases. You punch it out when the toilet is set. On a commercial job where the slab gets poured and tiled long before fixtures arrive, that is the whole reason to spec the KO version over a plain open flange.
4) What temperature range can this ABS DWV closet flange handle?
Service temperature runs from -40 degrees F to 180 degrees F, which covers normal sanitary drainage including dishwasher and laundry discharge. One hard limit: do not test or use the system with compressed air or other gases.
5) Does a flush closet flange sit on top of the finished floor or recessed?
A flush flange is designed to sit level with the finished floor rather than standing proud of it. That means the finish flooring height has to be accounted for when the stub is cut, because the pipe stop fixes how deep the fitting seats on 3 inch pipe. Set the flange too low and you need an extender ring and a thicker wax seal at the toilet.
6) What do I still need to buy to set a toilet on this flange?
The flange itself is the pipe-to-floor connection only. You will also need ABS solvent cement (and cleaner per the instructions), floor anchors appropriate to the substrate, closet bolts, and a wax ring or waxless seal. Nibco publishes plastic fittings installation instructions covering the solvent weld procedure.
