The PVC DWV closet flange features a knockout test plug and a hub connection. The closet flange is secured to the floor of the dwelling so that a toilet can be affixed to it and allow for a pipe connection (under the floor) to continue the piping for evacuation of the used water. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the most frequently specified of all thermoplastic materials because of its light weight, durability, and cost-effectiveness. PVC DWV is easy to install and is joined by solvent cementing or threading. PVC fittings exhibit high corrosion and chemical resistance and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco K440100 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Nibco 4855 closet flange fit 3 inch or 4 inch drain pipe?
The Nibco 4855 is a 4 inch by 3 inch closet flange: the flange body is 4 inch and the hub drops down to accept 3 inch Schedule 40 PVC DWV pipe. So it sets a standard toilet over a 3 inch waste line. If your stack under the floor is 4 inch, this is not the fitting you want.
2) What is the knockout test plug on this Nibco closet flange for?
It lets you pressure test the DWV system before the toilet goes on. The integral knockout plug seals the drain during the water test, then you punch it out when you are ready to set the fixture. Note the caution that comes with it: do not test or use the system with compressed air or other gases, water test only.
3) Can I use the Nibco 4855 PVC closet flange on a commercial job, and does it meet plumbing code standards?
It is listed for both commercial and residential plumbing. The fitting is made to ASTM D2665 and D3311, carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14, and is NSF U.P. Certified, which is the listing most inspectors look for on DWV fittings.
4) Will this PVC closet flange handle hot water or a steam line?
No. Maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F, and the fitting is intended for drain, waste and vent service only. It is fine for normal fixture discharge from a toilet, but it is not a pressure fitting and it should not see sustained high temperature flow.
5) Does the Nibco 4855 closet flange come with a metal ring or the bolts to set the toilet?
It is an all-PVC flange, white, with no metal ring. Closet bolts, the wax ring or seal, and the floor anchors are separate items you need to pick up with it. If your spec calls for a stainless or galvanized ring flange for extra pull-out strength, this one will not satisfy that.
6) Why choose a PVC closet flange over cast iron or ABS for a multi-family remodel?
PVC is the usual call on DWV work because it is light, easy to cut and cement, and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode the way metal will under a wet bathroom floor. The tradeoff is the 140 degree F ceiling and the fact it must be solvent welded, so it joins to PVC pipe, not to ABS with the same cement and not to cast iron without a transition coupling.
