Nibco 6000450 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What sizes does the Nibco 500 flare tube nut come in?
The Nibco 500 cast tube nut is made in two tube sizes: 3/4 inch (MPN 6000400) and 1 inch (MPN 6000450). Match the nut to the copper tube size you are flaring, not to the fitting body thread alone.
2) Can I use the Nibco 500 tube nut on a potable drinking water line?
No. The 500 tube nut is cast from ASTM B584 alloy C84400 bronze, and use in U.S. drinking water applications has been prohibited since January 3, 2014. It remains usable on non-potable service such as irrigation and other commercial or residential plumbing that is not drinking water. For potable work, use a lead-free flare nut.
3) Is this a complete fitting or just the nut?
Just the nut. The Nibco 500 is a replacement tube nut for the NIBCO flared fitting line, so it supplies the flare nut only. You still need the flare fitting body (elbow, coupling, adapter, whatever the joint calls for) and properly flared copper tube.
4) Do I need to solder anything to install a flare tube nut?
No heat involved. A flare connection is mechanical: the tube nut slides over the copper tube, the tube end is flared with a flaring tool, and the nut draws that flare against the fitting's cone seat. That makes it a good choice where an open flame is not allowed or where the joint may need to come apart later. The 500 is a flare end connection throughout.
5) What material is the Nibco 500 tube nut and will it hold up in aggressive water?
It is cast bronze, ASTM B584 alloy C84400, and it is dezincification resistant, which is what matters in water chemistries that strip zinc out of ordinary brass and leave a porous, weakened nut. Material and workmanship follow ASME B16.26.
6) Will the Nibco 500 nut work with any brand of flare fitting?
It is sold as a replacement for the NIBCO flared fitting line, and that is the pairing we can stand behind. Flare nut threads are not universal across manufacturers or across flare standards, so if you are mating to another brand's body, verify the thread and cone before ordering rather than assuming the nut crosses over.
7) Can I reuse an existing flare nut instead of buying a new one?
You can, but a nut with galled threads, a rounded hex, or a scored bearing face will not pull the flare down evenly and is the usual cause of a weeping flare joint. Because this is a cast bronze replacement nut in 3/4 inch and 1 inch, it is the cheap part of the repair compared to redoing the flare or chasing a leak behind a wall.
8) Is the Nibco 500 tube nut suitable for underground irrigation work?
Yes, irrigation is one of its listed system uses, along with commercial and residential plumbing. The dezincification resistant bronze is the relevant property for buried or wet-box service. Note it is not permitted on U.S. potable drinking water lines.
