Nibco E177100 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is the Nibco 818 DWV plug used for?
The Nibco 818 is a cast bronze cleanout plug with a male NPT thread. It threads into a DWV cleanout fitting to close off or terminate a section of drain, waste and vent line, and it backs out when you need rodding access. It is not a solder-end cap, the connection is threaded.
2) What sizes does the Nibco 818 cleanout plug come in?
Four sizes: 3/4 inch (E177050), 1 inch (E177100), 1-1/2 inch (E177200) and 2 inch (E177250). Size the plug to the NPT tapping in the cleanout body, not to the DWV pipe it sits on, since cleanout adapters are commonly tapped a size down from the run.
3) Can I use this plug on a pressurized water line instead of a drain?
No. The 818 is a DWV fitting, rated and intended for drain, waste and vent service only. For a pressure water line you need a pressure-rated plug or cap in the appropriate copper or bronze pressure fitting family, not a DWV cleanout plug.
4) Will a bronze cleanout plug seize in a copper cleanout the way a brass one does?
The 818 is cast from ASTM B584 alloy C84400 and is dezincification resistant, which is the alloy property that keeps the threads from breaking down in wet DWV service and welding themselves into the fitting. It still wants thread sealant or PTFE tape on the male NPT so it comes back out years later when somebody has to rod the line.
5) Is the Nibco 818 plug approved for commercial buildings or just residential?
Both. Nibco lists the 818 for commercial and residential plumbing systems, and material and workmanship are per ASME B16.23, the standard for cast copper alloy DWV fittings. That is the reference a spec engineer or institutional reviewer will be looking for on a submittal.
6) Do I need anything besides the plug to finish a copper cleanout?
The 818 is the plug alone. You supply the cleanout fitting it threads into, plus thread sealant or tape. If the cleanout body itself is being installed new, that is a separate copper DWV cleanout adapter, and Nibco publishes copper fitting installation instructions covering the joint work on the solder side of that body.
7) Is this a raised-head plug or a countersunk one for a flush floor cleanout?
The 818 is a cast bronze male NPT plug for copper DWV cleanouts. Where the head sits flush in a finished floor and takes a cover, most jobs use a purpose-built floor cleanout assembly with its own housing rather than a bare fitting plug. For a wall or accessible-ceiling cleanout on copper DWV, the 818 is the correct part.
8) Does this plug count toward a sustainable or recycled-content project?
Copper alloy fittings like the 818 are reusable and recyclable, which is why Nibco calls them out for sustainable projects, and they are made in an ISO 9001 certified facility. For a green building submittal, the citable facts are the C84400 alloy and the ASME B16.23 conformance.
