Nibco E517200 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What are the connections on the Nibco 875-S trap upturn, and what does M x S mean?
M x S means one end is a male thread and the other is a solder (sweat) socket. The threaded end is a male NPT with a straight thread noted in the product data, and the solder end takes 1-1/2 inch copper DWV tube soldered in the usual way. So you need a torch and solder on one side and a threaded mate on the other.
2) What is a DWV trap upturn actually for?
It forms the water seal in a drain, waste and vent line so sewer gas cannot come back up into the room. The upturn style turns the outlet upward, which is what you use when the branch or waste arm leaves above the trap rather than straight back. The 875-S is built for that DWV service in both commercial and residential plumbing.
3) Is the Nibco 875-S trap brass or copper, and will it hold up in aggressive water?
It is a cast bronze fitting, ASTM B584 alloy C84400, and it is dezincification resistant. That is the point of the alloy: in water chemistry that leaches zinc out of ordinary brass, this body will not go porous the way a high-zinc yellow brass trap can. Material and workmanship are per ASME B16.23.
4) Can I use this trap on a commercial job spec that calls out ASME B16.23?
Yes. The 875-S is made to ASME B16.23 for material and workmanship, with the body cast from ASTM B584 alloy C84400, and Nibco copper fittings are produced in an ISO 9001 certified facility. It is listed for commercial as well as residential plumbing use.
5) Will this trap solder directly to copper DWV tube?
The socket end is sized for 1-1/2 inch copper tube and is soldered, so it joins straight to copper DWV without an adapter. It is a cast bronze fitting, so bring it up to heat a little longer than a wrought copper fitting of the same size. Nibco publishes copper fittings installation instructions covering solder joint prep.
6) Should I use a bronze soldered trap or a slip-joint plastic P-trap under a sink?
A slip-joint plastic trap is for exposed, serviceable fixture connections you may want to take apart. A soldered cast bronze trap like the 875-S is what you use where the trap is concealed, in a wall or floor, or where the spec calls for metallic DWV: the solder joint and male NPT thread are permanent connections, and the dezincification resistant C84400 body is meant to stay in the building. Pick the bronze trap when it is getting buried, the slip-joint when it has to come apart.
