1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 885 DWV P-trap come in?
The Nibco 885 cast bronze DWV P-trap is made in 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2 and 3 inch sizes. Order by MPN: E565250 for 1-1/4 inch, E565300 for 1-1/2 inch, E565400 for 2 inch, E565450 for 3 inch. Size to the drain line it goes into, not to the fixture tailpiece.
2) Does the Nibco 885 P-trap thread on, or does it have to be soldered?
It solders. Both ends are solder cups (C x C), so the trap slips over copper DWV tube and is sweated in place. There are no threads and no slip nuts, so it is not serviceable the way a chrome tubular trap under a lavatory is. If you need a trap you can take apart for cleaning, this is the wrong type.
3) Will the Nibco 885 solder trap connect to copper DWV tube I already have in the wall?
Yes, if that tube is the same nominal size as the trap you pick. The C x C cups accept copper tube ends, sweated with solder. For a 2 inch copper DWV branch, the 2 inch trap, MPN E565400, is the match. It will not join to PVC or to no-hub cast iron without a transition fitting.
4) What is the Nibco 885 trap actually made of, and will it hold up in a drain line?
It is cast bronze, dezincification resistant, made to ASTM B584 alloy C84400 with material and workmanship per ASME B16.23. That combination is why it is specified for permanent, concealed DWV work where a plastic or tubular trap would not be accepted.
5) Can I use the Nibco 885 P-trap on a commercial job, or is it residential only?
Both. The 885 is listed for commercial and residential plumbing, in DWV drain, waste and vent service. It is a drainage fitting only, not for pressure water lines.
6) Why use a P-trap instead of an S-trap or a drum trap under a fixture?
A P-trap holds a water seal in its bend that blocks sewer gas from coming back into the building, and its horizontal outlet ties into a vented branch so the seal is not siphoned out. The Nibco 885 is a P-trap pattern. S-traps and drum traps are not accepted by most codes on new work for exactly that siphoning reason.
7) Do I need anything besides the trap to make up the joint?
The 885 ships as the cast bronze trap body alone. Solder, flux, and the torch or induction heat are yours to supply, along with whatever trap adapter or closet/fixture connection the fixture side calls for. Nibco's copper fittings installation instructions cover the sweating procedure.
8) Is this bronze trap a good fit for a LEED or sustainable-build spec?
