Nibco B175000 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does a Nibco 717-D drain cap do that a plain solder cap does not?
The 717-D is a solder cup cap with a drain port cast into it. A plain cap just seals the end of the tube; the 717-D seals it and gives you a tapped means to drain the line down, which is why it shows up at the low point of risers, heating loops and seasonal shutdowns. If you only need a dead end with no drain-down, a standard 617 style solder pressure cap is the simpler part.
2) Can I use the Nibco 717-D drain cap on potable water?
No. The 717-D is cast from ASTM B584 Alloy C84400 bronze, and use in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. For a potable line you need a lead-free rated fitting. The 717-D is still fine on non-potable service: commercial plumbing, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation and residential plumbing systems that are not drinking water.
3) What size copper tube does the Nibco 717-D drain cap fit?
It is made for 1/2 inch tube. The end is a solder cup, type C, meaning it slips over the outside of the tube end and is sweated on, so it suits 1/2 inch nominal copper water tube.
4) Is the Nibco 717-D a press or solder fitting?
Solder only. It is a sweat fitting with a solder cup, so it needs flux, heat and solder to make up. There is no press jaw profile and no O-ring on it, so a press tool is the wrong install method for this cap.
5) Is the Nibco 717-D bronze or copper, and does it matter for a heating loop?
The body is cast bronze, ASTM B584 Alloy C84400, not wrought copper, and it is dezincification resistant. Material and workmanship meet ASME B16.18. That cast bronze body is what carries the drain port boss, and the dezincification resistance matters on closed heating and HVAC loops where water chemistry attacks lower-grade brass.
6) Can I use this drain cap on a fire sprinkler line?
Fire protection is one of the listed system uses for the 717-D, along with commercial and residential plumbing, heating, HVAC, industrial and irrigation. On sprinkler work the drain port is the point of it, giving you a low-point drain on a copper branch. Local AHJ approval of the fitting on your system is still your call.
7) Nibco 717-D part number for the 1/2 inch drain cap?
The 1/2 inch cast bronze drain cap is Nibco MPN B175000, catalogued as the 717-D.
