1) What is the drain port on the Nibco 701-D-LF coupling actually for?
The 701-D-LF is a straight coupling with solder cups on both ends plus a drain port, so it joins two lengths of copper tube and gives you a permanent point to drain the line at a low spot. Typical uses are draining down a hydronic loop or a riser for service or winterization instead of cutting the pipe. Both ends are solder (C x C), so it installs the same way as any sweat coupling.
2) Is the Nibco 701-D-LF drain coupling legal for potable drinking water lines?
It is made for potable service. The 701-D-LF is lead-free and certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372, which is the certification plumbing inspectors look for on potable water fittings. It is cast in Silicon Performance Bronze alloy, which is also dezincification resistant, so it holds up in aggressive water where a standard brass fitting can lose zinc and fail.
3) Can I press or thread this instead of soldering it?
No. Both ends of the 701-D-LF are solder cups only, so it has to be sweated with flux and solder. If your job is press-only or you cannot get an open flame in that space, this is the wrong fitting and you need a press or threaded drain arrangement instead.
4) What copper tube sizes does the Nibco 701-D-LF drain coupling come in?
Two sizes: 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch nominal copper tube. The 1/2 inch is part number B01505L and the 3/4 inch is BF1510L. Both are C x C, meaning both ends are solder cups sized to slip over the outside of the tube.
5) Can I use this drain coupling on a hydronic heating or chilled water system, not just domestic water?
Yes. Nibco lists the 701-D-LF for commercial plumbing, residential plumbing, heating, HVAC, fire protection, industrial and irrigation systems. On a hydronic loop the drain port is what lets you pull the water down for a repair or a pump swap without draining the whole building.
6) Does the Nibco 701-D-LF come with a drain valve or hose bibb, or do I add one?
The fitting itself is the coupling with the drain port cast into it. Nibco publishes it as a solder pressure coupling with a drain port, so plan on providing whatever drain fitting or cap your spec calls for at that port, along with your solder, flux and tube. 7) Does the 701-D-LF meet the standard specified for wrought and cast copper solder fittings?
It is built to ASME B16.18, the design standard for cast copper alloy solder joint pressure fittings. That is the callout most commercial specs and drawings use for a fitting of this type, so it drops into a B16.18 spec without a substitution request.
8) Will a bronze drain coupling cause a problem soldered onto copper tube?
No. Silicon Performance Bronze is a copper alloy and solders to copper tube with standard lead-free solder and flux the same way a wrought copper fitting does.
