The tee features solder cups on the run and female NPT threads on the branch. This fitting allows for a connection to be made in continuous pipeline and branch out to a different direction while adapting from a solder connection to a threaded connection. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. In addition to its inherent qualities of beauty, durability and low maintenance, copper's reusability makes it an ideal application in sustainable projects. NIBCO® copper fittings are backed by a 50-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco B14640L – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does a Nibco 712-LF tee do with the C x C x F configuration?
The 712-LF is a copper tee with solder cups on both ends of the run and a female NPT thread on the branch. You sweat it into a continuous copper line and take a threaded branch off the side, so it is the fitting you use when the branch has to pick up a threaded component (a gauge, a valve with male NPT, a threaded riser or a device connection) instead of continuing in copper.
2) Is the Nibco 712-LF tee lead free and approved for potable water?
Lead-free, and made in Nibco's Silicon Performance Bronze alloy, which is dezincification resistant. The fitting is certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372, which are the drinking water and lead content standards inspectors look for on potable systems. It is built to ASME B16.18 design standards.
3) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 712-LF bronze tee come in?
Fifteen size combinations, from 1/2 inch through 2 inch on the run. Straight sizes are 1/2 inch (BF14575L), 3/4 inch (BF14605L) and 1 inch (B14640L), where all three openings match. The rest are reducing on the branch: 1/2 x 1/2 x 1/4, 1/2 x 1/2 x 3/4, 3/4 x 3/4 x 3/8, 3/4 x 3/4 x 1/2, 1 x 1 x 1/2, 1-1/4 x 1-1/4 x 1/2, 1-1/4 x 1-1/4 x 3/4, 1-1/4 x 1-1/4 x 1, 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 3/4, 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 1, 2 x 2 x 3/4, and 2 x 2 x 1.
4) Do I need to order a separate adapter to go from copper to threaded pipe on a branch?
No. That is the whole point of the 712-LF: the branch is already a female NPT thread, so you solder the run and thread the branch directly. Using a plain copper tee plus a separate male adapter adds a joint and a fitting; the 712-LF does it in one body. The threaded branch takes male NPT, so what screws in is your MIP nipple, valve or device tailpiece plus thread sealant.
5) Should I use a C x C x F tee or a C x C x C copper tee for a branch line?
Pick by what the branch connects to, not by the run. If the branch continues in copper tube, use an all-solder C x C x C tee, it is fewer dollars and fewer leak paths. Use the 712-LF C x C x F when the branch terminates at something threaded, like a hose bibb, a threaded shutoff, a pressure gauge tapping, or a transition to steel or PEX with a threaded adapter. It also helps where you cannot get a torch on the branch later, since the threaded side can be broken and remade without heat.
6) Which Nibco 712-LF size do I order for a 3/4 inch copper main with a 1/2 inch threaded branch?
That is the BF14615L, sized 3/4 x 3/4 x 1/2. The first two numbers are the solder cups on the run and the last is the female NPT branch. Same logic on the rest of the range: a 1 inch line with a 1/2 inch threaded takeoff is BF4650L, and a 2 inch line with a 3/4 inch takeoff is B14755L.
7) Will a brass tee corrode in my building's water? What is dezincification resistance?
Dezincification is the failure mode where zinc leaches out of a brass alloy in aggressive water, leaving a weak porous fitting that eventually splits or plugs. The 712-LF uses Silicon Performance Bronze, which is dezincification resistant, so it is the right choice where water chemistry has already caused pinhole or crumbling brass failures. For a property manager standardizing across a portfolio, it is the same fitting on every job regardless of local water.
8) Do I solder the Nibco 712-LF tee before or after threading the branch?
Thread the branch after soldering, or back the threaded component out before you heat the fitting. Torch heat travels through the bronze body and will cook plastic tailpieces, valve seats and thread sealant on anything already screwed into the branch. Nibco publishes copper fitting installation instructions for the joint prep and heating procedure, and those govern the solder joints on the run.
9) Can I get a 1/2 inch copper line with a larger 3/4 inch threaded branch?
Yes, that is the B14580L, 1/2 x 1/2 x 3/4. It is the one bull-head configuration in the range, where the branch is larger than the run, useful when a small copper line has to land on a 3/4 inch threaded device connection. Every other reducing size in the family takes the branch down, not up.
10) What is the smallest threaded branch available on a Nibco solder tee?
1/4 inch NPT, on the BF4590L (1/2 x 1/2 x 1/4). There is also a 3/8 inch branch on a 3/4 inch run, the BF4620L. Those two are what you use for a gauge tapping, a small sensor well, or an air vent takeoff on a copper line without drilling and brazing a boss.
