The tee features solder cups on the run, female NPT threads on the branch and mounting ears. This fitting allows for a connection to be made in continuous pipeline and branch out to a different direction while adapting from a solder connection to a threaded connection. The ears allow the fitting to be secured to a wall or ceiling support using a nail or screw. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. In addition to its inherent qualities of beauty, durability and low maintenance, copper's reusability makes it an ideal application in sustainable projects. NIBCO® copper fittings are backed by a 50-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco B15055L – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What connections does the Nibco 712-5-LF drop ear tee have on each port?
The 712-5-LF is a C x C x F tee: solder cups on both run ends and female NPT threads on the branch. So you sweat it into a copper line and thread a nipple, stub-out, or valve off the branch. It's offered in 3/4 inch pipe size.
2) Should I use a drop ear tee or a plain solder tee for a shower arm or wall stub-out?
Use the drop ear. A plain C x C x C tee gives you no threaded branch and nothing to fasten to framing, so the stub-out relies on the pipe alone for support. The 712-5-LF gives you a female NPT branch plus mounting ears that screw or nail to a stud or backer, which is what you want anywhere a fixture gets torqued on and off.
3) What are the ears on a drop ear tee for?
The two mounting ears let you fasten the fitting to a stud, blocking, wall, or ceiling support with a nail or screw. That anchors the branch so a threaded stub-out, like a shower arm or hose bibb nipple, doesn't move when someone puts a wrench or body weight on it.
4) What alloy is the Nibco 712-5-LF made from, and will it hold up in aggressive water?
It's Silicon Performance Bronze alloy, and Nibco lists it as dezincification resistant. That matters on water with high chloride or low pH, where standard yellow brass can lose zinc and fail at the threads over time.
5) Does this drop ear tee meet the fitting spec called out on my plumbing drawings?
The 712-5-LF is built to ASME B16.18, the design standard for cast copper alloy solder joint pressure fittings, and carries NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372 for potable water. That's the usual combination specified for domestic water fittings on commercial and institutional jobs.
6) Is the 712-5-LF a reducing tee or same size all around?
It's a straight size tee, meaning the run and branch are the same nominal size. In 3/4 inch, that's 3/4 inch solder cups on the run and a 3/4 inch female NPT branch. If you need to step the branch down, you'll need a bushing or reducing adapter threaded into it.
7) Can I solder this tee with the threaded branch fitting already installed?
Sweat the two run cups first, before threading anything into the branch. Torch heat travels through the bronze body and will damage a plastic, rubber, or sealed threaded component on the branch. Nibco publishes copper fittings installation instructions covering joint prep and heating for this fitting line.
