1) What does the drain port on the Nibco 705-D-LF vent elbow do?
The 705-D-LF is a 90 degree elbow with a drain port and cap built into the body. It turns the line 90 degrees and gives you a point to drain or vent that section of pipe without cutting into it later. The cap comes with the fitting, so you are not sourcing it separately.
2) Is the Nibco 705-D-LF vent elbow solder or press?
Solder only. Both ends are copper solder cups, C x C, so the fitting slips over the outside of Type K, L or M copper tube and gets sweated. There is no press or threaded end on it.
3) What size copper pipe does the Nibco 705-D-LF vent elbow fit?
It is made for 1 inch copper tube, both inlets, straight size (no reducing end). Order part B04075L for the 1 inch.

Not for a drain-down point. The capped drain port on the 705-D-LF gives you that access at the turn, so you can skip a tee plus a separate drain fitting. If you want a hose connection or a valve you can operate repeatedly, use a standard elbow and add a drain valve instead, since this one is a capped port.
8) Is a 90 degree vent elbow the right fitting, or should I use a standard 90?
Use the vent elbow where you need both a direction change and an access point: system high points for venting air, low points for draining. If the turn is just a turn, a plain 90 degree solder elbow is the cheaper, simpler choice. The 705-D-LF is a 1/4 bend, same geometry as a standard 90, with the port added.
