Nibco B040750 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the drain port on the Nibco 705-D vent elbow actually for?
The 705-D is a 90 degree copper/bronze elbow with a tapped drain port and cap built into the fitting. It does two jobs at once: turns the line 90 degrees and gives you a point to drain or vent that section of pipe without cutting in a separate tee and valve later. Handy at low points on hydronic and HVAC loops where you need to pull water out of a leg for service.
2) Can I use the Nibco 705-D vent elbow on potable drinking water?
No. Nibco states use in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. It is a cast bronze body to ASTM B584 Alloy C84400, which does not meet the current lead-free potable requirement. Keep it to closed-loop and non-potable work: hydronic heating, HVAC, fire protection, industrial and irrigation lines.
3) Does the 705-D elbow thread on or does it get soldered?
Solder only. Both ends are C x C, meaning copper solder cups that slip over the outside of Type K, L or M copper tube and get sweated. There are no threads on the run ends, so if you need to transfer to iron pipe you will want an adapter fitting downstream.
4) What copper tube sizes does the Nibco 705-D vent elbow come in?
Three sizes: 1/2 inch (MPN B040500), 3/4 inch (B040650) and 1 inch (B040750). Those are nominal copper tube sizes, so a 1/2 inch fitting sweats onto 1/2 inch nominal copper, not 1/2 inch OD.
5) Is the cap included with the 705-D or do I order it separately?
The drain port cap ships as part of the fitting. Nothing extra to buy to close the port off. If you want a permanent drain valve at that point instead, you would remove the cap and fit your own valve to the port.
6) Is the Nibco 705-D elbow cast bronze or wrought copper?
Cast bronze, to ASTM B584 Alloy C84400, and it is dezincification resistant. Wrought copper elbows are pressed from tube and have no provision for a tapped port, which is why a fitting with a built-in drain has to be cast. Material and workmanship follow ASME B16.18.
7) Will the 705-D work in a fire sprinkler or hydronic heating system?
Yes. Nibco lists this vent elbow for commercial plumbing, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation and residential plumbing service. On a heating loop the drain port is the useful part, letting you bleed or drain a branch at the turn. Just remember the potable water restriction still applies regardless of system type.
