The drain coupling features solder cups and a drain port. The fitting is used to connect two lengths of tube together and provide a means for draining the line. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. In addition to its inherent qualities of beauty, durability and low maintenance, copper's reusability makes it an ideal application in sustainable projects. NIBCO® copper fittings are manufactured in an ISO 9001 certified facility, and backed by a 50-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco B015150 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is a drain coupling like the Nibco 701-D used for on a copper line?
The 701-D joins two lengths of copper tube and adds a drain port at the joint, so the line can be drained down at that point. Both ends are solder cups (C x C), so it goes in as an inline fitting rather than at a terminal end. Typical uses run across residential and commercial plumbing, heating, HVAC, fire protection, industrial and irrigation systems.
2) Can I use the Nibco 701-D drain coupling on a potable water line?
No. The 701-D is cast from ASTM B584 alloy C84400 bronze, and use in U.S. drinking water applications has been prohibited since January 3, 2014. Keep it to non-potable service such as hydronic heating, HVAC, fire protection, industrial or irrigation piping. For potable copper lines you need a lead-free wrot or cast fitting.
3) I have a 3/4 inch copper line, which Nibco 701-D part number do I order?
For 3/4 inch nominal copper tube, order MPN B015100. The 1/2 inch is B015050 and the 1 inch is B015150. Size is called out by nominal tube size, so a 3/4 inch coupling fits 3/4 inch Type K, L or M copper tube.
4) What copper tube sizes does the Nibco 701-D drain coupling come in?
Three sizes: 1/2 inch (B015050), 3/4 inch (B015100) and 1 inch (B015150). Both cups are the same size on each one, so it is a straight-size coupling, not a reducer. If you need to change size at the drain point you will have to use a separate reducer with it.
5) Does the 701-D solder or thread onto the copper tube?
It solders. Both ends are solder cups sized to slip over copper tube, so the joint is made with flux and solder (or brazed) the same as any pressure fitting. There is no thread on the tube ends. Nibco publishes copper fitting installation instructions covering joint prep and heating.
6) Is this a cast fitting or a wrot copper fitting, and does it matter?
Cast bronze, not wrot copper. The body is ASTM B584 C84400 with material and workmanship per ASME B16.18, and it is dezincification resistant. Cast bodies give the wall thickness needed to carry a drain port, which is why a drain coupling is made this way rather than stamped from copper tube. Expect a heavier fitting and a bit more heat to solder than a wrot coupling of the same size.
7) Should I use a drain coupling or add a separate drain valve and tee?
A drain coupling puts the coupling and the drain point in one body, so you make two solder joints instead of the three or more a tee plus riser plus valve would take. That is the reason to pick it on a tight run, a hydronic zone low point, or a chilled water drop where there is no room for a tee assembly. If you want a permanent handled drain you would still go with a tee and boiler drain instead.
8) Will the Nibco 701-D work on a fire sprinkler or hydronic heating line?
Yes, both are listed applications for the 701-D, along with HVAC, industrial and irrigation piping. Because it is a cast bronze pressure coupling built to ASME B16.18, it goes in as a standard copper pressure joint on those systems. For the pressure and temperature limits on your specific system, work to the Nibco technical data for the fitting.
