The crossover coupling features solder cups. The fitting provides a means of connecting two lengths of tube, while crossing over a different perpendicular tube. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. In addition to its inherent qualities of beauty, durability and low maintenance, copper's reusability makes it an ideal application in sustainable projects. NIBCO® copper fittings are manufactured in an ISO 9001 certified facility, and backed by a 50-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco B280250 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is a crossover coupling used for in copper tube systems?
A crossover coupling lets one run of tube jump over another perpendicular tube without breaking the line. The Nibco 736 joins two lengths of tube while crossing over a pipe that runs across its path, so you avoid adding two 90s and a section of tube where lines conflict in a wall or ceiling.
2) Can I use the Nibco 736 crossover coupling on a potable water line?
No. The 736 is a cast bronze crossover coupling made to ASTM B584 Alloy C84400, and use in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. Put it on non-potable work: hydronic heating, HVAC, fire protection, irrigation, or industrial piping. For potable copper systems you need a lead-free wrought copper fitting instead.
3) Are both ends of the Nibco 736 coupling solder cups, or is one threaded?
Both ends are solder cups. The end connection is C x C, meaning copper tube slips into a cup on each side and the joint is soldered. There is no threaded end and no press or push connection on this fitting.
4) Is the Nibco 736 crossover coupling dezincification resistant?
Yes. The cast bronze body is dezincification resistant, which matters on closed-loop hydronic and industrial water where water chemistry can leach zinc out of ordinary brass and weaken the fitting over time.
5) Does the Nibco 736 meet ASME B16.18 for solder joint fittings?
Material and workmanship on the 736 crossover coupling are per ASME B16.18, the standard for cast copper alloy solder joint pressure fittings. That is the spec most commercial mechanical drawings call out for cast solder fittings.
6) Can I run the Nibco 736 crossover coupling on a fire sprinkler or hydronic heating system?
Yes. The 736 is listed for commercial plumbing, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation and residential plumbing service. The one restriction is potable water, where U.S. use has been prohibited since January 3, 2014.
7) Is a crossover coupling better than using elbows to jump a pipe?
A crossover is one fitting and two solder joints. Building the same jog out of elbows means four fittings, four joints, and cut pieces of tube, plus more restriction and more places to leak. Where two lines cross in a joist bay or a tight chase, the 736 is the faster and cleaner solution. Use elbows when the offset you need is larger than the fixed crossover geometry.
