1) What sizes does the Nibco 701 reducing coupling come in?
The 701 cast bronze reducing coupling is offered in two reductions: 3 inch by 1-1/4 inch (B003250) and 3 inch by 1 inch (B003300). Both ends are solder cups, so the larger cup takes 3 inch copper tube and the smaller cup takes the reduced size.
2) Can I use the Nibco 701 bronze reducing coupling on a potable water line?
No. Nibco states that use of this cast bronze fitting in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. Put it on non-potable service instead, such as hydronic heating, HVAC, fire protection, irrigation, or industrial piping. For potable copper work, use a wrought copper reducing coupling that meets the lead-free requirement.
3) Is this a solder fitting or does it press?
Solder only. Both cups on the 701 are soldered (or brazed) joints, C x C, so you need flux, solder, and a torch. There is no press or threaded option on this fitting.
4) What is the Nibco 701 made of, and will it hold up in aggressive water?
It is cast bronze, ASTM B584 Alloy C84400, and Nibco calls it dezincification resistant, which matters where water chemistry attacks brass fittings. Material and workmanship follow ASME B16.18.
5) Do I need a reducing coupling or a reducing bushing to go from 3 inch to 1 inch copper?
A reducing coupling like the 701 does the whole transition in one fitting: the 3 inch tube lands in the large cup, the 1 inch tube in the small cup, and you solder both. A bushing only adapts inside another fitting's cup and still needs that host fitting. If you are joining tube directly to tube, the reducing coupling is the single-piece way to do it.
6) Can I use this coupling on a fire sprinkler or HVAC line?
Yes. Nibco lists the 701 for commercial plumbing, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation, and residential plumbing service. The one restriction is potable water, which is off limits for this cast bronze alloy.
