The eccentric coupling features solder cups. The fitting provides a means to connect larger size tube to smaller size tube while keeping a straight line. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. In addition to its inherent qualities of beauty, durability and low maintenance, copper's reusability makes it an ideal application in sustainable projects. NIBCO® copper fittings are manufactured in an ISO 9001 certified facility, and backed by a 50-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco B021550 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between an eccentric coupling and a regular reducing coupling?
Both reduce one tube size to another, but the Nibco 702 is an eccentric reducer: the two solder cups are offset so the two tube runs stay on a common straight line on one side rather than sharing a common centerline. That matters when you need to keep the bottom (or top) of a horizontal run flat, for drainage or to avoid trapping air. A concentric reducing coupling steps the size down about a shared centerline instead and will raise or lower the smaller run.
2) What reducing sizes does the Nibco 702 eccentric coupling come in?
Four size steps: 3/4 x 1/2 inch (B021550), 1 x 3/4 inch (B021700), 1-1/4 x 1 inch (B021850), and 1-1/4 x 3/4 inch (B021900). Note the 1-1/4 x 3/4 gives you a two-size drop in a single fitting, so you do not have to stack a pair of reducers.
3) How does the Nibco 702 connect to the pipe, and does it need any threading?
It is a C x C fitting, meaning both ends are solder cups that slip over copper tube and are soldered or brazed. No threads on either end, so nothing to tape or dope, and no adapters needed if you are coming off copper tube on both sides. Prep is the usual: clean and deburr the tube, flux, and sweat the joint per Nibco's copper fittings installation instructions.
4) Is the Nibco 702 coppper or bronze, and will it hold up in a system with aggressive water?
The 702 is a cast bronze fitting, ASTM B584 Alloy C84400, not wrought copper. It is dezincification resistant, which is the relevant property where water chemistry attacks the zinc in brass alloys and leaves a weakened, porous fitting. Material and workmanship are per ASME B16.18.
5) Will a cast eccentric coupling fit the same tube as standard copper fittings?
Yes. The solder cups are made to ASME B16.18, which is the dimensional standard for cast copper alloy solder joint pressure fittings, so the cups accept standard nominal copper tube (Type K, L, or M) at the marked sizes the same way a wrought fitting would. Pick the size pair to match your two tube runs.
6) Can I use the Nibco 702 on a fire sprinkler or hydronic heating line?
Yes, those are listed uses. The 702 is intended for commercial plumbing, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation, and residential plumbing systems, with the single exclusion being U.S. potable drinking water after January 3, 2014. On a boiler or chilled water line the eccentric offset is often the point, since it lets you keep the top of the run level to vent air or the bottom level to drain.
7) Does the Nibco 702 eccentric coupling have a stop, or is it a repair coupling?
The 702 is a reducing eccentric coupling for joining a larger tube to a smaller tube, not a slip or repair coupling. If your job is splicing into an existing run of a single size without cutting the pipe back, a reducing eccentric fitting is the wrong tool for that; you want a same-size repair coupling instead.
