Nibco B039000 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is a baseboard tee used for on a hydronic heating loop?
The Nibco 705 baseboard tee has two solder cups and a female NPT branch outlet, and the branch is there to take a 1/8 inch vent so you can bleed air out of the system. On a fin-tube baseboard loop it goes at the high point of the run where air collects, and you thread an air vent into the center tap rather than running supply through it.
2) What size Nibco 705 baseboard tee do I need for 3/4 inch copper baseboard?
For 3/4 inch copper the 705 comes as 3/4 x 1/8 x 1 inch. The full size range is 1/2 x 1/8 x 3/4, 3/4 x 1/8 x 1, 1 x 1/8 x 1, and 1-1/4 x 1/8 x 1-1/4 inch. The center figure is always the 1/8 inch threaded vent tap; the two outer figures are the solder cup sizes, so on the smaller two sizes the run reduces or expands across the tee.
3) Can I use the Nibco 705 baseboard tee on potable water?
No. Use of this fitting in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. It is a cast bronze fitting in ASTM B584 alloy C84400, which is not a lead-free potable alloy. Keep it on closed-loop hydronic heating and other non-potable service.
4) How do the ends connect - is the Nibco 705 soldered or threaded?
Both. The configuration is C x F x C: the two run ends are solder cups that sweat onto copper tube, and the center branch is female threaded for a 1/8 inch NPT vent. You solder the run first and thread the vent in after, so the packing in the vent is not cooked by the torch.
5) Is this baseboard tee dezincification resistant?
Yes. The 705 is a cast bronze fitting made to ASTM B584 alloy C84400 and is dezincification resistant, which matters on heating and closed-loop systems where water chemistry can strip zinc from lesser brass over time. Material and workmanship follow ASME B16.18.
6) Do I get an air vent with the Nibco 705 baseboard tee?
No vent is included. The tee just gives you the 1/8 inch FNPT tap; you order the air vent separately, plus solder, flux, and 1/8 inch pipe dope or tape for the threaded joint.
7) What systems is the Nibco 705 tee approved for besides baseboard heat?
Nibco lists it for commercial plumbing, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation, and residential plumbing. The drinking water restriction still applies, so on plumbing work it belongs on non-potable lines only.
8) What is the Nibco part number for the 1-1/4 inch baseboard tee?
The 1-1/4 x 1/8 x 1-1/4 inch size is MPN B039000. The others are B038550 (1/2 x 1/8 x 3/4), B038750 (3/4 x 1/8 x 1), and B038900 (1 x 1/8 x 1).
