The tee features solder cups on the run and female NPT threads on the branch. This fitting allows for a connection to be made in continuous pipeline and branch out to a different direction while adapting from a solder connection to a threaded connection. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. In addition to its inherent qualities of beauty, durability and low maintenance, copper's reusability makes it an ideal application in sustainable projects. NIBCO® copper fittings are manufactured in an ISO 9001 certified facility, and backed by a 50-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco B146400 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How do the three ports on the Nibco 712 tee connect - is the branch threaded?
The 712 is a C x C x F tee: both run ends are solder cups that slip over copper tube, and the branch is female NPT thread. So you solder it into a continuous copper line and take off a threaded branch, which is how you pick up a gauge, a threaded valve, a hose connection, or a transition to threaded pipe without adding an adapter.
2) What sizes does the Nibco 712 tee come in, and can I get a reducing branch?
Run sizes span 3/8 inch through 2 inch, and most are available both as a straight-size tee and as reducing-branch combinations. Examples: 1/2 x 1/2 x 1/4, 1/2 x 1/2 x 3/8, 1/2 x 1/2 x 3/4, 3/4 x 3/4 x 3/8, 3/4 x 3/4 x 1, 1 x 1 x 3/8, 1 x 1 x 1/2, 1-1/4 x 1-1/4 x 1/2, 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 3/4, and 2 x 2 x 1/2. There is also a reducing-run version, 3/4 x 1/2 x 3/4.
3) What systems is the Nibco 712 C x C x F tee suitable for?
It is listed for commercial plumbing, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation and residential plumbing service. In practice that means hydronic heating and chilled water loops, mechanical room piping, compressed air or process lines, and irrigation, anywhere you need a threaded branch off soldered copper. Potable drinking water is the exception and is excluded.
4) Is the bronze in this Nibco tee dezincification resistant?
Yes. The 712 is cast from ASTM B584 Alloy C84400 and is dezincification resistant, which matters on closed-loop heating, chilled water and irrigation systems where water chemistry can leach zinc out of a high-zinc brass and leave the fitting porous.
5) What standard are these Nibco solder pressure tees made to?
Material and workmanship are per ASME B16.18, the standard covering cast copper alloy solder joint pressure fittings. That is the spec engineers call out on mechanical drawings for cast solder fittings, and it governs the solder cup dimensions so the run ends fit standard Type K, L or M copper tube of the marked size.
6) Do I need a threaded adapter to hang a gauge or threaded valve off my copper line?
Not with the 712. Because the branch is already female NPT while the run stays solder, the tee does the transition itself. Thread the male end of the gauge, valve or nipple straight into the branch with tape or dope, and solder the two run cups into the copper. Soldering a tee plus a separate female adapter is the alternative and adds a joint you do not need.
7) Is the Nibco 712 cast bronze or wrought copper, and does that change how I solder it?
It is cast bronze, not wrought copper. Cast fittings have heavier walls, so they take longer to bring up to solder temperature than a thin wrought copper tee. Heat the fitting body more than the tube and keep the torch moving. Also make up the threaded branch connection before or with care around the soldering heat. Nibco's copper fittings installation instructions are linked with the product.
