Nibco B460300 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Nibco 764 double elbow be used on potable water lines?
No. Use of the Nibco 764 cast bronze double elbow in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. Keep it on non-potable service: commercial plumbing outside potable lines, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial, and irrigation. If the line feeds a drinking water fixture, you need a lead-free potable-rated fitting instead.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 764 90-degree double elbow take?
It is made in a 1 inch x 3/4 inch x 3/4 inch configuration, part number B460300. The 1 inch cup is the run inlet and the two 3/4 inch cups are the outlets, so it is a reducing double elbow: it turns 1 inch copper tube down to two 3/4 inch branches at 90 degrees.
3) Are the ends of the Nibco 764 elbow solder cups or threaded?
All three ends are solder cups, C x C x C. The fitting slips over the outside of copper tube and is sweated with solder or brazed, so no threading or pipe dope is involved. There are no female threads on any port, so if you need a threaded branch you want an FTG or a female adapter configuration, not this one.
4) What is a double elbow fitting actually used for, and why not just use two separate 90s?
A double elbow changes pipeline direction 90 degrees in two directions from a single body, so one fitting does the work of a tee plus two elbows. That matters where you are splitting a 1 inch main into two 3/4 inch branches in a tight joist bay or wall cavity: fewer joints, fewer solder cups to heat, and a shorter overall takeout than building the same turn out of individual fittings.
5) What is the Nibco 764 double elbow made of, and will it hold up in a hydronic or irrigation system?
The body is cast bronze to ASTM B584 Alloy C84400 and it is dezincification resistant, which is the property that matters in heating and irrigation water where zinc leaching degrades lower-grade brass. Material and workmanship are per ASME B16.18. It is listed for commercial plumbing, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation, and residential plumbing service, with the drinking-water restriction noted separately.
6) Is the Nibco 764 a wrought copper fitting or a cast fitting?
Cast, not wrought. The 764 is a cast bronze body per ASTM B584 Alloy C84400, which is why it is offered in the double-elbow pattern at all, since that shape is not practical to form in wrought copper. Cast fittings are typically heavier-walled than wrought, and they take the same solder joint technique on copper tube.
7) Do I need anything else to install the Nibco 764 double elbow?
The fitting ships as the bare bronze body, nothing is bundled with it. To make up the three joints you supply the solder or brazing alloy, flux, and the cleaning tools for the tube ends and cups. Pick your solder to suit the service, since this fitting is not for U.S. potable water after January 3, 2014. Nibco publishes copper fittings installation instructions for joint prep and heating.
