1) What does a Nibco 5801-2-7 ABS trap adapter connect to on each end?
One end is a spigot for solvent cementing into ABS DWV pipe or fitting hub, the other is a slip joint that takes a slip nut and washer. That is the whole point of the part: it gets you from a glued ABS system over to a slip joint connection, like a tubular trap arm or a fixture drain tailpiece. Glue the spigot side, hand tighten the slip nut on the other.
2) What sizes does the Nibco 5801 ABS trap adapter come in, and is there a reducing version?
Four sizes: 1-1/4 inch, 1-1/2 inch, 2 inch, and a reducing 1-1/2 inch x 1-1/4 inch. The reducer is the one to grab when you are coming off a 1-1/2 inch ABS drain line but the trap or tailpiece is 1-1/4 inch tubular, which is common under an older lavatory. Part numbers run I014500 for 1-1/4, I014550 for 1-1/2, I014600 for the 1-1/2 x 1-1/4, and I014650 for 2 inch.
3) Can I glue a Nibco ABS trap adapter into PVC DWV pipe?
No. It is ABS, and ABS and PVC are cemented with different solvents and are not a glue-together joint. If your existing drain is white PVC, use a transition coupling or a threaded transition rather than trying to solvent weld this into it. ABS DWV does connect out to steel, copper, or cast iron, but that is done through transition fittings, not directly.
4) Does this Nibco ABS adapter meet code for a potable-adjacent commercial drainage job?
The standards are stated on the fitting: ASTM D2665, ASTM D2661 and D3311, CSA B181.1, NSF/ANSI Standard 14, NSF U.P. Certified, and UL Listed 94V-0 for flammability. That set is what an inspector on a commercial or residential DWV install is usually looking for, and Nibco lists it for both commercial and residential plumbing use.
5) Is a slip joint trap adapter the right fitting, or do I need a hub x slip joint adapter?
Depends which side of the joint you are on. The spigot end on the 5801 goes INTO a hub or socket, so it works when you are stubbing out of an existing ABS fitting hub or a coupling. If you need to slide over the outside of a length of ABS pipe instead, you want a hub (socket) x slip joint adapter, not this one. Same slip joint outlet either way, different pipe end.
6) Will a Nibco 5801 spigot x slip joint adapter fit Schedule 40 ABS drain pipe?
Yes, it is a Schedule 40 DWV fitting, so the spigot end is sized to go into a Schedule 40 ABS hub or socket in the matching size. Match the nominal size to your pipe, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, or 2 inch.
7) Is this ABS trap adapter rated for hot water from a dishwasher or a commercial sink?
Service temperature runs -40 F to 180 F, which covers normal fixture and appliance discharge, including dishwasher drain water. It is a drain, waste and vent fitting only. Do not test or use it with compressed air or other gases, and it is not a pressure fitting.
8) Will these black ABS adapters match the drain fittings already in my building?
They are black ABS, which is what matches an existing black ABS DWV system. If the waste piping in the units is white, that is PVC and this is the wrong material to glue into. For a fleet of similar lavatory or sink replacements, the 1-1/2 inch and the 1-1/2 x 1-1/4 reducing size are the two that cover most fixture trap arms.
9) Can I use an ABS DWV trap adapter on a vent line, or only on a drain?
Both. It is a DWV fitting, rated for drain, waste and vent, so it is fine anywhere in the gravity drainage or venting system. What it cannot do is carry pressure or gas of any kind.
