The ABS DWV trap adapter features a spigot x slip joint with chrome nut connection and provides a means for adapting a solvent weld connection to a slip joint connection. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. 1) What does the Nibco 5801 ABS trap adapter connect to on each end?
One end is a spigot that solvent cements into an ABS DWV hub or socket, and the other is a slip joint with a chrome nut for the trap tailpiece. No. This is an ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) fitting and the spigot end is meant to be solvent cemented into ABS DWV pipe. ABS and PVC take different cements and are not the same material system. If your stack and branch lines are white PVC, buy the PVC version of the trap adapter instead.
4) Does the Nibco ABS trap adapter meet code for a commercial job?
It is listed to the standards a plumbing inspector will look for on ABS DWV: ASTM D2665, ASTM D3965, ASTM D2661 and D3311, CSA B181.1, NSF/ANSI Standard 14, NSF U.P. Certified, and UL Listed 94V-0. The fitting is rated for both commercial and residential plumbing use.
5) Can this trap adapter tie ABS drain piping into an existing cast iron or copper waste line?
Not by itself. The 5801 adapter only bridges a solvent weld ABS socket to a slip joint tailpiece. ABS DWV can be connected to steel, copper or cast iron, but that takes a transition fitting made for it, which is a separate part from this trap adapter.
6) What temperature range can an ABS DWV trap adapter handle under a sink?
Service temperature runs from -40 F to 180 F, which covers normal hot water discharge from a sink or dishwasher drain. ABS also resists everything from sewage to household chemical cleaners. One hard limit: never test or use the system with compressed air or other gases.
