The ABS DWV trap adapter features a hub x slip joint connection and provides a means for adapting a solvent weld connection to a slip joint connection. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco I018200 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Nibco 5801-7 ABS trap adapter connect my ABS drain line to a P-trap?
That's exactly the job it does. One end is a hub (solvent weld socket) that cements onto ABS DWV pipe, and the other is a slip joint end that takes the trap's nut and washer. So you go from glued pipe to a mechanical, removable trap connection without threading anything. Sizes run 1-1/4 inch, 1-1/2 inch, 2 inch, and a 1-1/2 by 1-1/4 inch reducing version.
2) Which size Nibco ABS trap adapter do I need for a 1-1/2 inch drain with a 1-1/4 inch lavatory trap?
Use the reducing one, MPN I018150. It is the 1-1/2 by 1-1/4 inch trap adapter: the hub takes 1-1/2 inch ABS pipe and the slip joint side accepts a 1-1/4 inch trap, which is the usual lav situation. If both the pipe and the trap are the same size, take the straight version instead, I018000 for 1-1/4 inch or I018050 for 1-1/2 inch. Kitchen and tub drains at 2 inch use I018200.
3) Can I glue an ABS trap adapter onto PVC pipe?
No. The 5801-7 is ABS, and ABS and PVC are not solvent welded to each other in a code-compliant joint. If your line is white PVC, buy the PVC version of the trap adapter. The slip joint end is a different story: that side is mechanical, so it will take a PVC, ABS, or chrome brass trap tailpiece with the right washer, regardless of what the hub is glued to.
4) Is the Nibco 5801-7 trap adapter approved for use on commercial drain waste and vent systems?
Yes, and it is listed for it. The fitting is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF U.P., UL Listed 94V-0, and manufactured to ASTM D2661, D2665, D3311, D3965 and CSA B181.1. Nibco calls out both commercial and residential plumbing use, DWV service only. That set of markings is what an inspector or a spec-driven MRO buyer is looking for on a black ABS drainage fitting.
5) Can I use an ABS trap adapter on a hot water discharge or a dishwasher drain?
Within its temperature band, yes. The ABS fitting is rated for continuous service from -40 F to 180 F, which covers normal hot waste and a dishwasher or washing machine discharge. What it is not for is pressure: do not test or use it with compressed air or any other gas. Drainage, waste and vent only, water testing only.
6) Do I need to buy a slip joint nut and washer with the Nibco trap adapter, or does it come with one?
Plan on the trap supplying the nut and washer. A trap adapter gives you the hub to glue and the slip joint shoulder the nut tightens down onto, and P-traps and tailpieces are normally sold with their own nuts and washers. Also pick up ABS solvent cement for the glued end, since that joint is solvent welded, not threaded.
7) When should I use a trap adapter instead of a male adapter or a threaded trap connection?
Use the trap adapter when you want the trap to come apart later. The slip joint end lets you loosen a nut and pull the trap for snaking or cleaning, which is why it is the standard finish under a sink or lav. Go to a threaded or male adapter instead when you are transitioning to threaded pipe or a fixture with male thread, since that joint is meant to stay put. For tying ABS into existing steel, copper, or cast iron, you want a transition fitting rather than either one.
8) Will a black ABS trap adapter match the drain fittings already in my building?
If the existing DWV is black ABS, yes. The 5801-7 is black ABS throughout and solvent welds to the same ABS pipe and fittings, so it blends into an existing ABS stack or branch. If what is in the wall is white PVC, it will not match and should not be glued to it. Nibco makes the same fitting in four sizes, which is enough to standardize bath and kitchen rough-ins across a portfolio on one part family.
9) Is an ABS trap adapter safe to use where drain chemicals and cleaners go down the line?
ABS holds up to a broad range of what goes down a drain, from sewage to typical household and commercial cleaning chemical formulations, which is part of why it is used for DWV in the first place. It is also light and easy to cut and cement, so a service tech can swap a trap connection without hot work or heavy tooling.
