Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. 1) What does the Nibco 5803-2-TPA tray plug adapter connect to on each end?
Spigot on one end, NPSM female thread on the other. The spigot end solvent welds into an ABS DWV hub fitting, and the threaded end takes a threaded connection, so it's how you get from a cemented DWV line to a threaded joint. Schedule 40 ABS, black.
2) Can I use an ABS tray plug adapter on a hot waste line from a dishwasher or lab sink?
Service range is -40 F to 180 F, which covers normal hot sanitary drainage but not continuous boiling discharge. ABS DWV is drainage only, so it is not for pressure service, and it must never be tested or used with compressed air or other gases.
3) Will an NPSM thread on this adapter seal against a tapered NPT male fitting?
NPSM is a straight (parallel) mechanical thread, not tapered, so it seals on a gasket or washer face rather than on thread engagement the way NPT does. Pair it with a straight-thread tailpiece or slip-joint style connection and its washer. Screwing a tapered male NPT into it will engage but is not the joint this adapter is built for.
4) Is this ABS adapter approved for use in a commercial building drain system?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF U.P. certification, is UL Listed 94V-0, and meets CSA B181.1 plus ASTM D2665, D3965, D2661 and D3311. Nibco lists it for both commercial and residential plumbing.
5) Can I tie ABS DWV into an existing cast iron or copper drain line?
Yes, through transition fittings. ABS DWV joins by solvent cementing or threading and connects to steel, copper or cast iron using transition fittings, so the tray plug adapter itself handles the ABS-to-thread step and the transition fitting handles the dissimilar material.
6) Does the spigot end of the tray plug adapter glue inside or outside the pipe?
A spigot end is sized like pipe, so it goes into the hub or socket of the mating ABS DWV fitting and is solvent cemented there. It does not accept pipe inside it. Match it to Schedule 40 ABS DWV 1-1/2 inch.
7) Will ABS drain fittings hold up to bleach, drain cleaner and other chemicals in a maintenance setting?
