The ABS DWV 90-degree vent elbow features a hub x hub connection and the abrupt 90-degree angle is used to change the direction of flow in the venting side of the system. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. Nibco I053400 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Nibco 5807-V ABS elbow be used on a drain line, or is it vent only?
Vent only. The 5807-V is a vent 90, meaning the bend is abrupt rather than long-sweep, so it changes direction on the venting side of a DWV system where nothing is flowing. On the drain or waste side you want a sweeping 1/4 bend or a combination fitting instead, so solids keep moving. The fitting itself is straight-size, hub x hub, in Schedule 40 ABS.
2) How do you join a hub x hub ABS vent elbow, and do I need a primer?
Both hubs are solvent weld sockets, so the pipe slips into the socket and is bonded with ABS solvent cement. ABS does not require the purple primer that PVC does, but it does require ABS-specific cement, not PVC or all-purpose transition cement unless that cement is listed for ABS-to-ABS. The fitting can also be joined by threading where the system calls for it, and it ties into steel, copper, or cast iron through transition fittings. Do not test the line with compressed air or any other gas.
3) Will a Nibco ABS vent elbow glue directly to PVC DWV pipe?
No. This is ABS, and ABS does not solvent weld reliably to PVC. If your existing stack is white PVC and you are extending in black ABS, you need a listed ABS-to-PVC transition, either a cemented transition fitting or a mechanical shielded coupling, depending on what your inspector accepts. Matching material is simpler: run ABS to ABS through this fitting.
4) Is this ABS vent fitting approved for commercial buildings, or residential only?
Both. The 5807-V is called out for commercial and residential plumbing, and it carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 with NSF U.P. certification, plus a UL Listed 94V-0 flame rating. It is manufactured to ASTM D2665, D3965, D2661 and D3311. Those are the marks a plan reviewer or facility inspector looks for on a DWV vent fitting.
5) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 5807-V vent elbow come in?
Five sizes: 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 3, and 4 inch. All are straight-size hub x hub, so both ends take the same nominal pipe. For a 2 inch vent riser the part number is I053400; 1-1/2 inch is I053300. If you need to change size at the elbow, this is not the fitting, since neither end is reduced.
6) What temperature can an ABS DWV vent elbow handle in an unheated attic or crawlspace?
Rated for service from -40 F to 180 F, which covers vent piping run through unconditioned attics, crawlspaces, and cold-climate roof penetrations. The 180 F top end is why it stays on drain, waste and vent duty and never goes on a hot or pressurized supply line.
7) I have a 2 inch ABS vent that needs to jog around a truss. Is one 90 the right fitting?
For a vent, yes, an abrupt 90 is acceptable and this one is made for it, in 1-1/4 through 4 inch. Two of them back to back will offset you around the framing member. Keep the run pitched back toward the drain so condensate drains rather than pooling in the offset, and stay on the vent side of the system with these; below the flood level of the fixture, use drainage-pattern fittings.
8) Does the Nibco 5807-V elbow match Schedule 40 ABS pipe I already have on site?
The sockets are sized for Schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe, so standard black ABS DWV pipe in the matching nominal size drops straight in. Confirm the pipe is DWV Schedule 40 and not a thinner-wall or cellular-core product outside that spec before cementing.
