Nibco NBC-611 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does the Nibco 611 copper tee connect to, and do I need threads?
The Nibco 611 is a solder tee with C x C x C ends, meaning all three openings are solder cups that slip over the outside of copper tube and are sweated with solder. No threading, no adapters. If your run is threaded pipe, you need a fitting with an F (female NPT) or M (male NPT) end instead, not the 611.
2) Can I use the Nibco 611 tee on potable water in an apartment or commercial building?
Yes. The 611 wrot copper tee is lead-free and certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372, which are the drinking water certifications plumbing inspectors look for on potable systems. It is also dezincification resistant. The same fitting is listed for residential and commercial plumbing along with heating, HVAC, irrigation, compressed air, fire protection, industrial and medical gas service.
3) Is the Nibco 611 approved for medical gas piping?
It is. The 611 tee meets NFPA 99 Health Care Facilities Gas and Vacuum Systems and Compressed Gas Association Pamphlet G4.1 for medical gas, and med-gas is one of its listed system uses. For med-gas work order the Cleaned and Bagged version rather than the plain wrot version, since med-gas installations require fittings cleaned for oxygen service and kept sealed until brazing.
4) How do I read the size on a reducing copper tee like 1 x 1 x 1/2?
Copper tee sizes read run first, then branch. On a 1" x 1" x 1/2" the two ends of the straight run are 1 inch and the outlet coming off the side is 1/2 inch. On a 1" x 1/2" x 3/4" the run reduces from 1 inch to 1/2 inch and the branch is 3/4 inch. The 611 covers both straight tees and reducing patterns from 1/8 inch up through 8 inch, so match all three numbers to your tube before ordering.
5) What is the difference between the wrot and cleaned and bagged Nibco 611 tee?
Same fitting, different prep. Wrot is the standard copper tee for general plumbing, heating and HVAC. Cleaned and bagged has been cleaned and sealed in a bag at the factory so it arrives free of oil and residue, which is what medical gas and oxygen service require. If you are running med-gas per NFPA 99, specify cleaned and bagged; for ordinary water or hydronic work the wrot fitting is what you want.
6) Does the Nibco 611 tee come in a size that reduces the branch on a 4 inch or 6 inch main?
Yes. Large reducing branch patterns are covered: on a 4 inch main you can get 4" x 4" x 3/4", 1", 1-1/2", 2", 2-1/2" and 3". On a 6 inch main the branch options run 1/2", 3/4", 1", 1-1/4", 1-1/2", 2", 2-1/2", 3", 4" and 5". There are 8 inch bodies too, with 2", 2-1/2", 3", 4", 5" and 6" branches.
7) Will the Nibco 611 tee meet the dimensional standard called out on my mechanical drawing?
For engineered work the 611 is built to material and workmanship per ASME B16.22, and material, workmanship and dimensions per MSS SP-104. Sizes 5 inch through 8 inch also carry MSS SP-109. Those are the standards specs normally cite for wrot copper solder fittings, so a submittal calling for B16.22 or SP-104 is satisfied.
8) What pressure rating does the Nibco 611 copper tee carry?
Select diameters of the 611 are UL 207 Recognized to 700 PSI. That recognition is diameter dependent rather than blanket across the whole size range, so on a high pressure or fire protection job confirm the specific size you are ordering carries it. Fire protection is one of the listed system uses for the fitting.
9) I need to tap a branch line off an existing copper main. Is this the right fitting?
That is exactly what a tee does. The 611 lets you carry the run through in a continuous pipeline and take a branch off in a different direction, all in one fitting. Cut the main, sweat the tee in with the two run cups on the existing line, and run your new branch off the third cup. Pick the pattern where the branch size matches the line you are adding, not the main.
10) What copper alloy is the Nibco 611 tee made from?
Wrot copper, ASTM B75 alloy C12200, which is the standard phosphorus deoxidized copper used for plumbing tube and fittings. Beyond corrosion behavior, that matters at the end of a job: copper is fully recyclable, which is why it earns credit on sustainable and LEED oriented projects.
11) Can I use a solder copper tee on a compressed air line in my shop?
