Nibco H098250 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Nibco 911 DWV tee be used on pressure water lines, or is it drain only?
Drain only. The Nibco 911 is a DWV fitting, built for drain, waste and vent service, and that is the application Nibco lists for it. For pressurized hot and cold water distribution you need a pressure-rated copper tee (Nibco 611 series), not a DWV tee. DWV fittings have thinner walls and shorter solder cups than pressure fittings and are not intended for supply piping.
2) Does this Nibco copper tee solder onto DWV copper tube, or does it need press or no-hub connections?
All three openings are solder cups, C x C x C, so the tee is soldered (sweated) onto copper DWV tube with flux and solder. No press tool, no gaskets, no threads. You cut, ream, clean and flux the tube, seat it fully in the cup and heat the joint. Nibco publishes copper fitting installation instructions for the joining procedure.
3) What sizes does the Nibco 911 DWV tee come in, including reducing configurations?
Eight configurations. Straight sizes are 1-1/4 inch, 1-1/2 inch and 2 inch. Reducing versions are 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/4, 2 x 2 x 1-1/2, 2 x 2 x 1-1/4, 2 x 1-1/2 x 2 and 2 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2. Note the difference between the last two: 2 x 1-1/2 x 2 reduces the run and keeps a 2 inch branch, while 2 x 2 x 1-1/2 keeps a full 2 inch run and reduces only the branch, which is the usual pick for tying a 1-1/2 inch lav or vent into a 2 inch line.
4) How do I read the size order on a reducing DWV tee like the 2 x 2 x 1-1/2?
The first two numbers are the run (the straight-through inlet and outlet), and the third is the branch. So 2 x 2 x 1-1/2 carries a 2 inch run with a 1-1/2 inch side outlet. 2 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 means the run steps from 2 inch down to 1-1/2 inch with a 1-1/2 inch branch. Getting this order wrong is the most common reason a reducing tee shows up on site and will not fit.
5) What copper alloy is the Nibco 911 wrot tee, and will it hold up in aggressive water?
It is wrot copper to ASTM B75, alloy C12200, and Nibco lists it as dezincification resistant. Because it is copper rather than a brass alloy containing zinc, there is no zinc to leach out, which is the failure mode dezincification describes. Material and workmanship follow ASME B16.29.
6) Does ASME B16.29 matter for a spec job, and will this tee meet a plan callout for wrot copper DWV fittings?
ASME B16.29 is the standard covering wrot copper and copper alloy solder joint drainage fittings, and the 911 states material and workmanship per that standard along with ASTM B75 alloy C12200. If the drawing calls for wrot copper solder DWV fittings to B16.29, that is the callout this fitting is built to. Nibco also states the copper fittings are made in an ISO 9001 certified facility.
7) Do I need a reducer bushing to tie 1-1/4 inch pipe into a 2 inch copper DWV line?
Not with the right tee. The 911 is made in 2 x 2 x 1-1/4, so the reduction is built into the branch cup and you solder the 1-1/4 inch tube straight in. Same idea for a 1-1/2 inch branch off a 2 inch run, which is the 2 x 2 x 1-1/2. Buying the reducing tee saves a joint and a fitting on every connection.
8) Can I use this copper DWV tee in a commercial building, or is it residential only?
Both. Nibco lists the 911 for commercial and residential plumbing systems. That covers multi-family risers and vent stacks as well as single-family work, so a property manager standardizing on copper DWV across a portfolio can use the same fitting in either.
9) Is copper DWV worth specifying over PVC on a green building project?
Copper's case on sustainable projects is reusability: it can be recycled at end of life rather than landfilled, and Nibco calls that out alongside durability and low maintenance. Copper DWV also does not require solvent cement and holds up where plastic is restricted, such as plenum returns and some high-rise applications.
