1) Can I use the Nibco 901 DWV coupling on pressure water lines, or is it drain only?
The Nibco 901 wrot copper coupling is a DWV fitting, made for drain, waste and vent systems. DWV fittings are thinner-walled than pressure fittings and are not the part to use on a potable water supply line. For a pressure joint, use a pressure-rated copper coupling instead.
2) Does the Nibco 901 coupling solder, or does it press or thread on?
Both ends are solder cups, C x C, so the joint is soldered onto copper DWV tube. There are no threads and no press seal. You will need flux, solder and a torch to make the joint; Nibco publishes copper fitting installation instructions for the procedure.
3) What sizes does the Nibco 901 DWV coupling come in, and are there reducing versions?
Seven sizes: 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 3 and 4 inch straight couplings, plus two reducers, 1-1/2 x 1-1/4 inch (H009450) and 2 x 1-1/2 inch (H009600). The reducers let you step down a branch without adding a separate bushing.
4) Is this Nibco coupling cast or wrot copper, and what alloy?
Wrot copper, ASTM B75 alloy C12200, with material and workmanship per ASME B16.29. It is also dezincification resistant. Wrot fittings have a tighter dimensional tolerance on the cup than cast fittings, which is what most commercial DWV specs call for.
5) Will the Nibco 901 work for a commercial building job, or is it residential grade?
Both. The 901 coupling is listed for commercial and residential plumbing use, and it is built to ASME B16.29 from C12200 copper, which is the standard reference for copper DWV fittings on commercial drawings.
6) I need to join two pieces of 2 inch copper DWV pipe in a stack repair. Is this the right fitting?
Yes, that is exactly what it does. The 2 inch straight coupling, MPN H009550, joins two lengths of copper DWV tube with a soldered cup on each end. If the cut-in leaves you tying 2 inch into 1-1/2 inch, use the 2 x 1-1/2 reducing coupling H009600 instead.
7) Does this copper DWV coupling have a stop in the middle, or is it a slip coupling?
The 901 is a standard C x C coupling with solder cups on both ends, intended to butt two tube ends together. It is not a slip or repair coupling, so plan on having enough movement in the pipe to seat both ends fully into the cups.
