Nibco H018050 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does the Nibco 901-7 trap adapter connect to on each end?
The Nibco 901-7 is a C x SJ trap adapter: one end is a solder cup that sweats onto copper DWV tube, the other is a slip joint that takes a tubular trap arm with a nut and washer. It is the transition piece between a soldered copper drain stub-out and the chrome or plastic P-trap under a fixture.
2) What sizes does the Nibco 901-7 trap adapter come in?
Three: 1-1/4 inch, 1-1/2 inch, and a 1-1/2 x 1-1/4 inch reducing version. The reducer is what you want when the copper stub-out is 1-1/2 inch but the fixture trap is 1-1/4 inch tubular, which is common on lavatories.
3) Can I use a copper trap adapter on a drain line, or is it only for supply?
It is a drain fitting. The 901-7 is built for DWV (drain, waste and vent) service and is approved for both commercial and residential plumbing. It is not a pressure supply fitting.
4) What is the Nibco 901-7 trap adapter made of, and will it hold up in a waste line?
Wrot copper, ASTM B75 alloy C12200, made to ASME B16.29 for material and workmanship. It is dezincification resistant, so it will not suffer the zinc loss that plagues some yellow brass adapters in aggressive water.
5) Do I need to order a slip joint nut and washer separately for this trap adapter?
Plan on it. The 901-7 supplies the slip joint end of the connection; the nut and washer that clamp the tubular trap arm into it are normally furnished with the trap kit or bought separately. On the solder side you will also need solder, flux and a fitting brush to make the joint.
6) Should I use a copper trap adapter or a male adapter with a threaded trap?
Use the 901-7 C x SJ when you are going straight from soldered copper DWV into a tubular trap arm; the slip joint lets you set trap height and alignment after the copper is sweated in. If the trap or tailpiece is threaded rather than tubular, a solder-to-thread adapter is the correct part instead, not a trap adapter.
7) Can I solder the 901-7 with the slip joint nut and trap already in place?
No. Sweat the copper end first with the tubular parts and any plastic or rubber washers removed, then let it cool before assembling the slip joint. Torch heat will destroy a slip joint washer and can warp a plastic nut. Nibco publishes Copper Fittings Installation Instructions covering joint prep and soldering.
8) I'm standardizing lavatory rough-ins across a building. Is this fitting suitable for commercial work?
Yes. The 901-7 is listed for both commercial and residential plumbing systems and is made in an ISO 9001 certified facility. Stocking the 1-1/2 inch and the 1-1/2 x 1-1/4 inch reducing version covers most lavatory and sink rough-ins off a 1-1/2 inch copper stub.
